You Have To Admire Mr Bean

Giant bill for fixing Rowan Atkinson's McLaren

By GREGORY KATZ, AP

LONDON — Everyone who's had a fender bender knows the cost of repairs is going up. But few cars can be as costly to fix as "Mr. Bean" actor Rowan Atkinson's rare McLaren F1.

It took more than a year — and more than 900,000 pounds ($1.4 million) — to get his supercar up and running after a 2011 crash that left Atkinson with a badly damaged shoulder.

The high-performance car makes extensive use of carbon fiber and needed specialist care — it took weeks just to get a proper insurance estimate.

Ben Stagg, specialty insurer with RK Harrison, said the quality components used to make an F1 are one reason the repair costs were so high.

"All modern supercars are predominantly carbon fiber — most Lamborghinis, most Ferraris — and the smallest ding in carbon fiber is a big repair job," he said. "And part of the engine bay is gold, that's the best heat conductor. It's the materials they used compared to everyday cars that make it so expensive."

He said many owners baby their expensive cars, driving them only a few times a year in perfect weather conditions, but Atkinson actually drives his McLaren extensively.

The unusual repair job, thought to involve one of the largest car insurance settlements in British history, is extensively documented in Classic & Sports Car magazine, with a picture of the burgundy McLaren on the cover.

Atkinson, last seen by many playing piano as Mr. Bean during the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, told the magazine he believes supercars should be used, not sequestered in garages.

"It depresses me when great cars are hidden away," he said. "It's a crime not to use it."

Magazine editor Alastair Clements said Atkinson should be applauded.

"He let us do the story because he wanted other enthusiasts to know that he loves it, that he isn't just some celebrity with an expensive car, that he's owned it for 15 years and loved it for 15 years," he said. "He's put it back exactly as it was. He's a bit of a hero. It's much more than the value."

Of course, the value is there — Stagg said the last used McLaren F1 sold on the open market went for about 3.5 million pounds.

Steve,

That's a great story! My friends with super cars never take them out. Hats off to Mr. Bean.

Can you imagine wrecking that car. Reminds me of the Bugatti that wiped out in the lake

It didn't matter. He could afford to have all the King's horses and all the King's men put his car back together again.

its his second F1 crash! he totaled another one in '99. collectors of rare cars will tell you they're just custodians preserving them for future generations. mr beans comment "It depresses me when great cars are hidden away," "It's a crime not to use it." applies to those that have actual driving skills.

if he wants to flog a supecar he should consider a mass produced one like a 458 italia or aventador - he'd likely still be over his head.

He is! At 1:44.2, he is 0.1 sec off the top of the leaderboard.

Sebastien Vittel did the same track in 1:44.0 although in a slower car (Suzuki Liana instead of Kia Ceed).
Yeah.
Matt is also a talented driver (and racing fan nut like Rowan) and ironically drove the cheaper McLaren MP4-12C around the Top Gear circuit.
Rowan has racing driving experience behind him some single make racing such as the twitchy Renault Turbos to Aston Martin Vantage Zagato (respec'd for racing no 33) and Silverstone Classic ; thought Matt also had racing experience but could be wrong about him.
OK so in one race Rowan did crash the Zagato :)
Fast car though considering its age in race spec: 185mph top speed with 0to60mph of 4.8s.

Steve, not sure if in wiki but I know I read somewhere else he has around £100m
Not really surprised when you look at everything he has done, although it is fair to say a lot of the cash probably does come from Mr Bean/Johny English.
Many years ago managed to see him in London doing his one man show, absolutely amazing and a great comedic talent, which sadly Mr Bean has probably cleared from many peoples mind.
Brings back memories also of Stilgoe and Skellern stage show I also saw that was around the same time and they were incredibly good, but Rowan was a genius back then with his stage shows I feel.

Cheers

He lost his comedic skills once he adopted that of Hollywood :(. The old physical British comedy was what was great about him.

Yeah - when I was in varsity in London, it was Not the Nine O'clock News and Black Adder that got me to follow Rowan Atkinson. His partner Griff Rhys Jones is another of my favorite comedians. I thought Mr Bean to be far too slapstick and didn't enjoy that aspect of his comedy.

I thought that both the accident in 1999 and the one in 2011 was in the same car.... this one took a year to fix, I thought that the first accident took two. But, in a car that light with that much power and no ABS, no stability control, no traction control and he drives it every day, two accidents in the 15 years he's owned the car doesn't sound bad....
