Point made then. Though I liked Heat TBH.

Irishman isn't that great. Pretty soon all the actors will be moving around in coffins. Harsh, but true.

Which is scary as I am sure in the future long after they are gone they will be resurrected digitally!!!

In the year 2019 (this year) The Irishman is one of the best films made, period.
Sure Scorsese has made Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and about two dozens more.
They were no made in 2019 though.

Sure De Niro and Pacino appear in Heat, directed by Michael Mann, not made this year though. Same for Casino (Scorsese), The Godfather trilogy (Francis Ford Coppola), and all the other mob and gangster movies made since before Al Capone & gangs. ...From the era of Charlie Chaplin, the Charleston, the Gold Rush, The Prohibition, Chicago, the underworld, ...till today (2019 and coming up next year ... November).

The Irishman has become a phenomenon; everyone is talking about, everyone is looking for the truths. Martin Scorsese knew what he was doing, and chapeau as he still succeeds to this day and way beyond after we're all dead and buried or incinerated. He took the news out of Joker, finally. Time we move on, from Joaquin Phoenix to Robert De Niro...I'm all in.

Everywhere we land on the TV channels and Internet news it's all about Jimmy Hoffa and The Irishman. It is inescapable, the power within captivating stories of our American history through films.

I'm fully involved because because in 2019 I simply love The Irishman, the film.
I am fully aware that I witnessed one of the best films this year, and its long lasting impact is just starting ...

I think Scorsese knew very well the impact his film would have even based on a flaky book by a flaky writer and a flaky suspect, Frank Sheeran. In my own book I Heard You Paint Houses is as flaky as it can be. But Scorsese isn't interested by snow flakes from Snow White; he's a filmmaker with a punch to the face, a solid punch. A figure of speech to say that he's the master of getting our attention/interest. It's all there onscreen, in black and white.

Earlier this morning I open the door and went outside facing what is happening in the world ...
This came up from the sky above and the ocean disappearing in the distant horizon ...

Like I said, The Irishman opens up to much more than what we bargain for, with a double punch making the impact last ... eternally? Nobody knows because nobody will ever get there .. .

Before I posted the above (post #64) I've watched this short video clip ... link below ...
https://video.foxnews.com/v/6110935113001#sp=show-clips

I didn't want to share it but I changed my mind for people who haven't seen it.
Also because I never watch anything from FOX news; but I occasionally make exceptions...I'm not that anal and I'm not a man of prejudices; I like to keep all my options in the open, my cards (hands) diversified, my mind expanded ...

Well I guess we will have to wait and see the awards Bob

personally I liked i liked DeNiro in the role but he was not nearly as convincing to me as Joaquin Phoenix in Joker

Did Robert DeNiro once in the movie convince you he was an Irishman other than the blue eyes he was given.

this is nothing more than speculation. For all we know he is buried in the outfield of Yankee Stadium as the concrete was being poured. The end of The Irishman was only speculation.
For me, my vote goes to Joaquin Phoenix as Best Actor

I agree Steve; Joaquin is the top contender for best actor.
It's a figure of speech to say that the main attraction is now on the Irishman (Robert De Niro in the film). I think I've read in the past that both had a small friction on the set of Joker?

In a similar vein where old school and new waves clashes @ the movies; Mobster movies versus Marvel movies. ...Where Martin Scorsese isn't afraid of speaking openly his mind ...

I know; I only put that short clip (less than a minute) as an attraction, a prelude, a distraction, ...it's a year old. But the other one (9 minutes) is from yesterday...fresh new. And I believe that the real killer of Jimmy Hoffa is the one mentioned. Because I've read several articles that lead to the same guy.

Take the time to check it out and also read the articles. You gave me great advice in the past ...

Of course Steve; all Hollywood films are loose on the facts and the truth.
If we go with what we've been told in films we've been living in the blind since we were born.
That's what entertainment is part of.

‘The Irishman’ earns first major best picture prize from the National Board of Review

And here we go ... the balls are starting rolling ...

"Last year, the board’s top pick, “Green Book,” went on to win the Oscar for best picture. But generally speaking, while the National Board of Review’s best film picks have often subsequently landed best picture nods, they have only occasionally predicted the eventual winner."

"A big win for Netflix here scoring top pic. Despite the wave of Roma fever a year ago, that movie didn’t score any prime wins from NBR, but was listed on their best of pic list. That Alfonso Cuaron directed black and white film won Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography at the Oscars."

I've already made the connection between The Irishman and Green Book, as they are are both road trips around the country, and both with a mob affiliated chauffeur, and several stops along the way.
_____

Best Director, Quentin...really?
Not a single mention of Joker; no DC comic book character?

I'm looking forward to the Oscars; see what the Academy film industry voters will be coming up with this year. It sure is interesting with a war film remaining to be seen...1917, one film this year again from Netflix movie studios, one Manson satire from Quentin, one supervillain from DC comics, one comedy with James Bound, another one with Eddie, a car flick (Ford/Ferrari), a remake of Midway, the girl from OZ, and a whole lot more ... foreign unseen yet ... Pain and Glory.

I know the year is not over, I know that I have few more films to see before Oscars night (just over two months away), so far I can see The Irishman collecting the bulk of the Oscars 2020 ... with four or five of them. It's all good fun @ the movies ... because like music they matter.

I know people are going to be interested in this character ...

And beyond ...

Real mob stories, the mafia, crime organizations in North America are things that fascinate us all since we were kids. If not it's because you were a priest or a rancher or in the Hollywood film industry (other legitimate avenues, like all of us). The full interview lasts one hour and forty minutes, easy to find. This guy doesn't take detour, he's a straightforward wiseguy.

I have zero clue how many million WBF members watched 'The Irishman' ...

I participate here and there in film cinema forums, and the topic came out on the percentage of viewers who watched 'The Irishman' in one single 3 1/2 hours session, I included.
If you have seen it @ the theater you had no choice...no interlude with this baby.

On Netflix not many people are used to watch a longer flick in a single shot, like 'The Irishman' was scheduled to be played...as intended by its film director, Martin Scorsese.
Marty said don't watch it on your cell phone, nothing smaller than a large tablet ...
https://www.samsung.com/uk/tablets/galaxy-view-18-4-t670/

Some folks watched it in two, three and even four sessions...like a mini-series.
In my honest opinion it's best in one single shot...no discontinuity between two, three or four days...no interlude, no cut, no stop, no break, no nothing but one long take...like ' The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' Extended Edition (2D)...four hours and ten minutes (regular theatrical is 3h 20m...only ten minutes shorter than 'The Irishman').

A big screen is an asset, an OLED 4K UHDTV is perfectly fine for the masses.
I'm sure Marty would appreciate a 65 to 77" OLED Sony or LG or Panasonic TV to watch his own film sitting say 7 to 10 feet from it with his wife and couple grand kids. They wouldn't mind too much. The blacks are perfect, the colors accurate, the contrast great, the dynamic range superb, the picture bright and punchy, the details excellent, the response magnificent, the wide viewing angles, unparalleled uniformity.

* If you did watch 'The Irishman' did you in one shot, or more?
And if you did in more that one long continuous shot, do you go to the movie theaters that present films that are no longer than say 2 1/2 hours, shorter?
In a theater, sitting in one chair in the same position for four hours (with all the previews and cartoons, rolling end credits, etc.) without a bathroom break, a beverage break, a snack, ...you have to be ready...it's part of that cinematic experience when your bowels can be inflamed and highly promoted by Steven Spielberg. Lol

I read a review online somewhere that suggested breaking at 1:40. We did and watched the rest the next night. That worked fine for us. All in all we thought it was a good but not great film
