I’m not a big classical lover, many in this hobby are. I am only beginning to notice how performances result in dramatic differences, but its hard because I don’t have the patience to hear dozens of different orchestras and recordings to find the best LPs.

But some folks have asked me to post some Youtube clips of classical music, so here is a bit from side B of Moussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”. It is from an Analog Productions reprint of a Living Stereo recording of Fritz Reiner conducting the Chicago Symphony. (I’m eager to learn of better recordings.)

A little long - I wanted to share some delicacy and some drama…

Wow, that is exceptional. Is that the 2 or 4 disc version?

Bob many thanks for sharing this. Great choice for listening… must be hard to go to work some times with that room.

Reiner’s Pictures is definitely a benchmark performance of this work. I read a while back that the master tapes for the accompanying Mussorgsky Night on Bald Mountain might be damaged which is sad as Reiner’s recordings from his peak with Chicago are treasures and it’s an orchestra of renown for both its amazing technique, versatility and sound. Reiner always managed to get a lot of richness out of them (he’s famed for his control and precision as well as being more than a bit scary in rehearsals). Performance always makes the difference.

You have to start doing live symphonies to get classical music , you will also hear how woefully inadequate hifi systems are at reproducing a live Symphony, well unless you have an imagination like Bonzo and start air conducting at full glory ..!

I can listen to symphonies at home and fall asleep for free! And when I snore I won’t F it up for everyone. :p

Honestly, I’ve tried to “get” classical music all my life. It escapes me. Maybe the songs are too long. Maybe I’m just a rube?

I am more of a jazz, blues, n’ funk kind’a guy.
