Now the real irony will be if Andy Reid develops Smith and the Chiefs face the 49ers in the Super Bowl (won't ever happen but one can only think how that game would go)

The Kansas City Chiefs have reached a deal with the San Francisco 49ers to acquire quarterback Alex Smith according to multiple reports.
Transactions cannot be made official until the NFL's new year begins March 12. but according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the deal would include the Chiefs' second-round picks in the NFL Draft in 2013 and 2014. This year's second rounder is No. 34 overall.
The Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals were two of the teams reported earlier to be interested in Smith, who was replaced this past season by Colin Kaepernick as the 49ers' starting quarterback. Kansas City had been considered the most likely landing spot for Smith.
The Arizona Republic reported this week that the Cardinals were "exploring the possibility" of a trade for Smith, who beat Arizona in his last full game as a starting quarterback for the Niners last season.
Smith has generated plenty of interest among NFL teams in need of a quarterback. He is still young at age 28 and effective. When he suffered a concussion in November that ultimately cost him his starting job with the 49ers, Smith had been playing well, In his past 32 games, Smith has thrown for 38 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and posted a 95.1 rating.
The 49ers went on to reach the Super Bowl with Kaepernick as their quarterback and Smith watching from the sideline as the backup.

This is a good trade for both teams. The Chiefs weren't going to sign Matt Cassell and Andy Reid has a good history developing quarterbacks. Since there doesn't appear to be a sure fire franchise quarterback in the draft, the Chiefs get a serviceable quarterback and can use the #1 pick in the draft for one of their many, many other needs. Read a rumor that they may make a run at the Jets' Revis...

the smart money said he would be released and they could have had him for nothing. no running QB for Andy Reid.

I'm curious if Matt Flynn will be going anywhere. Heck of a QB to not be playing.
