Ordered a pair of G1 Mkll yesterday and it will be about 2 weeks before delivery and possibly a week of break-in before evaluation of the contribution (or not) to my X1v3 system. I have not used subs before so this is a step one project from that standpoint.
LL21 I see that you have moved to XLS - Do you still see a need for sub support/addition?
Hi Dbeau,
Congrats! Take your time with the careful setup. In our own setup and those of many big Wilson owners:
1. Let the main Wilsons run full-range
2. Cut off the sub from playing music above 38hz-40hz or so
3. Watch the volume...the idea that you cannot tell where the sub is or if it is playing is surprisingly good advice. And then as you start to get it right...when you switch it off...THEN you realize there is a foundational element and a spacial element that disappears...rather than just pure outright bass hits that actually disappear (In my limited experience, if you suddenly have bass hits disappearing, then it is 'possible' the sub is up too high.)
As for XLF, I suspect the answer is yes, I expect to continue use of subs...the reason is because the idea of subs (for me) is not about increasing bass hits (which the XLF can do very well on its own, as can all the big Wilsons)...it is about giving unlimited capability to the sound system to create sub-40hz frequency (but really sub 30hz) where spacial information and 'sense of venue' seems to lie.
In fact with the XLF, I would actually like to explore increasing/improving the 'unlimited capability' for effortless delivery of that subterranean information (as it is i am on very low volumes with 1 sub)...to see whether or not having 'massive amounts greater' cone dispersion capability enables an effortless ability to fill that spacial void even better than 1 single sub can. I suspect the answer is it will.
