I'm trying to make some digital copies of LP's and have come to one stumbling block. My phono stage has a USB output but when I plug this into my Windows7 computer, it shows up as "Microphone". In order to record anything useful, I have to set the gain level at 3 out of 100.

I have the same problem with the Weiss Minerva/DAC2. It shows up as "Microphone" and again I have to set the gain level all the way down.

Using an EMU-0404 USB, I don't have this problem as then it shows up as both Microphone and Line-In. But I haven't managed to make the EMU-0404 work on Windows 7.

Any ideas?? I'm using Audacity as the recording software.

Type "Sound" in start menu and select the Properties control panel that shows up. Then select Recording Tab. Double-click on the Microphone device. Then level. What is the value of Mic Boost?

At least you have a level control. I have had difficulties with adjusting input levels with both OS X and Windows 7. My OS X software, Vinyl Studio, says in its help file that this is normal and that volume has to be adjusted outside of the computer. This means I can't record an LP from the preamp's tape out jacks. I need to run the signal through the preamp line stage as well and control the level with the preamp's analog volume control.
