DG released a new recording of Rachmaninov Cello Sonata with Gautier Capuçon and Yuja Wang performing today.
I just listened to it on my headphone system at work (Hugo 2 + Aeon Flow Closed). And while I think Yuja Wang’s piano playing has matured, I still really prefer the poorly recorded but better performed recording with Lynn Harrell and Yuja Wang from DG that seems to only be available from streaming. There is something that connects me much more emotionally to this piece with Lynn Harrell on cello. And maybe Yuja Wang‘s inexperience at the time of the recording also made her performance freer even if it was less refined?
I have to admit I haven’t listened to most of the recordings out there. And obviously, I haven’t listened to this on my main stereo system. Would be interested in others’ thoughts about this new performance, especially compared to their favorite recordings.
