Nikon Targets Star Gazers With D810A SLR for Astrophotography

Nikon is releasing a specialized version of its D810 SLR that is fine-tuned for astrophotography, the D810A.

It uses the same full-frame 36-megapixel image sensor as the D810, but it is sensitive to infrared light on the 656nm wavelength, a portion of the spectrum that's blocked by a filter on standard cameras. This allows the camera to pick up the red hues emitted by many galaxies and nebulae.

The D810A also adds a virtual exposure preview, which takes some of the guesswork out of capturing an exposure of the night sky. It supports exposures up to 15 minutes in duration, and can go longer in timed mode—you'll just need to open and close the shutter manually, either via the release on the camera or via remote. Noise can be an issue with long exposures, but the included Capture NX-D software will add an astrophotography noise reduction tool for use with the D810A.

The D810A is set to ship at the end of May; its price is not yet set.
