Two time tour de france champ Laurent Fignon died today from cancer. A great cyclist most remembered for his last day defeat to Greg Lemond. It was clear Fignon never recovered from that defeat. I thought he had nothing to regret or be embarrassed about. but was merely beat by a better rider that day. Cycling etiquette dictated that no one race against the yellow jersey on the last day. Fignon led by 50 seconds. Usually an insurmountable lead even with the time trial looming. No doubt Lemond, never loved by the peleton IMO, spent the winter preparing for the time trial ,was prepared for it. He was pushing a huge gear at the time 55x12. By the time Fignons' team found out it was too late to match his equipment. Lemond won, completing his comeback from being "Cheyneied" in a hunting trip with his brother in law.
The sport of cycling was revolutionized. Miguel Indurain often won the tour on the first time trial giving himself a 2-4 minute lead.

Fignon with his glasses and his pony tail and specs did not look very intimidating but often destroyed the competition. Rest well for a job wel done.
