- 40 years ago today, on June 7, 1979, President Jimmy Carter declared the month of June “Black Music Month.”
- Congress affirmed this declaration on June 6, 2000, when they passed House Resolution 509 – Recognizing the importance of African-American music to global culture and calling on the people of the United States to study, reflect on, and celebrate African-American music.
- In 2009, President Barack Obama changed the name of the celebration from “Black Music Month” to “African-American Music Appreciation Month.”
