Saw this film this afternoon as it has been getting terrific reviews.

It was a terrific film but certainly not IMO deserving of Oscar nods. Takes place in a futuristic Los Angeles where a very bored and depressed Theodore Twombly (who's job is writing letters of love for others) installs a new OS to his computer which is capable of artificial intelligence

Theodore is also in the midst of a divorce which worsens his depression. The OS installs after a few questions and by his choice takes on a female voice called Samantha with whom he falls in love and takes everywhere with him. Looking at this futuristic society the entire populace is self indulgent on a daily basis with their ear pieces talking to their portable computers.

I found it a bit slow moving and at times perhaps a bit long but what an interesting story

Joaquin Phoenix was excellent and Scarlett Johanssen plays the voice of Samantha.

Amy Adams also is in the film (she must make 6-7 films per year)

The whole concept of artificial intelligence is far from hypothesis and it gives one pause to consider

I heard people talking and scratching their heads after the film saying "they aren't sure if they liked it but they did"

From MRQE.com which gave the film an 83 which is very good as most films are in the 70's........

Joaquin Phoenix stars in Spike Jonze's soulful sci-fi comedy-drama about a lonely writer who falls in love with his computer's highly advanced operating system. Theodore Twombly (Phoenix) has built his career on expressing the emotions that others cannot. His job is to pen heartfelt, deeply personal letters to complete strangers based on details provided by the clients of the company he works for, and he has a knack for finding just the right words for every occasion. Meanwhile, reluctant to sign the papers that will finalize his divorce to his childhood sweetheart, depressed Theodore has slowly withdrawn from his supportive social circle, which includes his longtime friend Amy (Amy Adams), herself floundering in a failed marriage. When Theodore purchases a new state-of-the-art computer operating system with the ability to learn and grow with the user, he sits down at his desk and prepares to get his life in order. Adopting the name Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), the perceptive software slowly begins to bring Theodore out of his shell by encouraging him to start dating again, and joining him everywhere he goes. Very quickly, their relationship turns intimate, with Theodore teaching Samantha what it means to feel human and Samantha giving him the courage to walk away from his failed marriage. Things soon get complicated, however, when Samantha's rapidly-evolving knowledge base begins to alter the very core of their relationship

Sounds like the Big Bang Theory episode where Raj fell in love with Suri.

Saw "Her" this weekend and really enjoyed it. Not perfect, but a wonderful, contempletive film examining the nature of reality and the meaning of human interaction. Sort of a "Don Quixote" for the 21st century. Joaquin Phoenix was terrific and deserved an Oscar nomination. I thought the set design and costuming really enhanced the film.

I liked it.

"Her" is probably not for everybody but I felt that it was a worthy addition to the nominations.
