So do you get out much to have a a regular idea what music should sound like?
Buskers outside a bar don't count. Nor does anything amplified, even though some venues amplify really well (like King's Place and Ronnie Scott's here in London, UK). I'm not suggesting all venues are reference, I've been to concerts in car parks (multi-story and underground), warehouses and once experienced Tales of Hoffmann when all that could be heard was wind and waves crashing into the back of set. Any genre, including when accompanied with dance, acting, juggling, etc.
