We saw this film yesterday. I must admit that I have been waiting quite a while to see this film having been fascinated by the role Johhny Depp takes on. He portrays Jimmy "Whitey" Bulger who controlled crime and racketeering in South Boston from the time of his release from prison in 1975. His make up reminded me of similar I the role Steve Carrell played last year for which he was nominated as Best Supporting actor. I liked this film. It just wasn't great. To med it was a 3.5 out of 5. The story at times moves slowly at times but quickly at others. Depp nails the role IMO. It also shows the role of Bulgers childhood friend John Connolly who is now an FBI agent intent in bringinging down the Mafia in Boston. He convinces Bulger to become an informant for the FBI. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Bulgers younger brother who is just the opposite from Whitey as he has become a state senator. Dakota Fanning plays Whiteys wife. The film is worth watching but I had expected more.
