Hello pearljam5000! Welcome to WBF!

Please tell us about the kind of sound you like. Can you give us any examples of systems you have heard in the past that you like?

Do you tend to focus on achieving emotional engagement to the music you like? Do you tend to focus on wanting to hear every detail in the recording? Do you like playback systems to be "accurate"? Do you like playback systems to make your favorite music sound pleasing?

maybe after retirement he decided he will start on a new hobby

That hobby can only end in even less money and divorce. :p
I think he will stick with hifi.

I see a new hobby maybe a yacht. But not at the exclusion of Hi-fi.
Genesis Tribute is my current favorite in that range.

@pearljam5000 Welcome! As others have said, more info on your rig today, your plans, room, etc. will help get better responses.

I am guessing from your userID that "rocking out" might just figure highly in your list . In the $100K ballpark, a speaker that rocks
out like very few others, no listening fatigue, extreme dynamic and frequency range coverage from 12 Hz on up to 35 kHz and covers
every other musical genre extremely well are the Legacy VALORs with Wavelet v2 active crossover and room correction. They weigh
in on the price scale at just under your budget number at $86K USD.

pearljam - if you have the room for them the EA MM-7 Mike's pre-owned pair would be an incredible value and IMO outperform any dynamic loudspeakers available anywhere near their price. I used the MM7s with two woofers per side for a client in a medium size, treated room (see below) and they were simply awesome!

On new products there are so many choices! From my experience in Munich this year for your budget I was impressed with the Rockport Orion's at $130k driven by Absolare electronics. To my pleasant surprise, my favorite speakers near the $100k price point were the Zellaton Pluro Evo's at $75,000, although at $175,000 Von Schweikert Ultra 7s were also exceptional but obviously not in budget.

As Ron referenced, musical taste, room size, accompanying equipment and your musical priorities and intangibles matter. Mine priorities in no particular order are coherence/timing, lack of compression, a smooth spectral balance, and a speaker that disappears. I generally find once those boxes are checked I can relax into my favorite music and let the magic happen!

Good luck with your search.

Even after listening to several excellent speakers at Pacific Audiofest 2023, I am still happy with Sceana 3.2 augmented with pair of Rel 31 subwoofers.

The most salient feature is realistic soundstage and palpable image.

It could play aplomb without any noticable distortion. :)

My favorite is the time and phase correct VANDERSTEEN System 9 which is their Model 7 EXTRM and Sub 9 subs. Match them with their purpose made amps and new preamp (this fall) and I’m in bliss (when fed great source material)

@pearljam5000 - Your call on not answering the questions about your preferences/goals. That said , if you have done any research on the speakers recommended thus far do any meet your objectives? If so in what respects? If not in what respects?
