Swiss artist Hans Ruedi Giger, better known as HR Giger, has died at the age of 74 from injuries sustained in a fall.

The celebrated artist was best known for inspiring and working on the designs of Sir Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror masterpiece Alien, for which he won a Visual Effects Oscar in 1980.

For me, this is one of the very few modern era "monster" creations that still stands the test of time, really does capture a menacing top of the food chain type alien IMO.
Amazing the original design goes back to the 70s and still is a great template all these years later.

It is a shame. May he rest in peace. Alien was as significant as Star Wars in how far ahead of its time it was on special effects and production values. I can still watch it and not get bored.

How did he fall? Usually when women want to kill off their elderly husbands, they make them do some type of house repair that requires them going up on a ladder while they are reading his insurance policy.

That's why I tell my wife all the time I don't have life insurance any more. She still has her life insurance reflexes pretty healthy i.e. nudging me in the path of speeding vehicles, setting up booby traps and training the dog to trip me, pulling off the covers on frigid nights.

Reminding her, however, has resulted in warmer nights and many fewer close calls.

HR Giger was also responsible for the cover art of "Brain Salad Surgery" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

"Alien" and "Blade Runner", both Ridley Scott films, remain my top two desert island movies.
