That might be true for the box swappers, but not for people who tend to hold on to what they have--which appears to be most of the people here.

Why did you ask for five tracks and leave three spaces?!?!?

I think there are well discussed similar threads on this topic.

I honestly don't think I could rattle off five favorites.

So what?It's a hobby. If you don't like audio equipment go to a concert.
If you don't have five selections why did you comment?

1. Arthur Fiedler/Boston Pops: Overture medley to "Jesus Christ Superstar"; from a 1971 Polydor album, called "Arthur Fiedler Superstar". [All "kitsch" aside...when Fiedler left RCA and went to D.G.-run Polydor, they gave him a (then) up-and-coming producer that would later become a Classical Grammy-winning legend: TOM MOWREY. Mowrey, beginning in 1970, shook the Pops' sound up out of that 1950s-like/Leroy Anderson-centric rut it had been stuck in for most of the decade and reinvigorated it with faster/more bombastic arrangements to parallel nicely with the (then-new) "Evening At Pops" tv show. This, particular, album was engineered by Volker Martin and Guenter Herrmanns...so, no wonder it's no sonic slouch.]

2.Ravel (Carmen): "March of the Toreador"; either Paray and the DSO, 1956 (great front-to-back projection conveyed by the old Mercury Living Presence minimalist miking techniques)...or, a 1964 recording by Charles Munch leading the London Festival Orchestra for a "Phase 4 Stereo" release. [Munch was often criticized for being "too polite" or "dainty" a conductor while with Boston in the '50s...but this, here, demonstrates he could be fierce.]

3. Rachmaninoff "Concerto No. 2"; Bernstein N.Y. Phil/Entrémont soloist; Columbia, 1961. [If one can follow along Bernstein's clearly audible humming all throughout the second movement (as well as the inordinate number of squeaking chairs), it makes the whole thing seem like a living "time capsule trip".]

4. Rolling Stones' cover of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now"; "12x5"; London, 1964. [The pulsating combination of Charlie Watts' snapping backbeat and Bill Wyman's perfectly counterpointed, "bouncy" bass -isolated together in the right channel- makes one think they *were* the best rhythm section in Rock history!]

5. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass' "Casino Royale Theme"; A&M (or Colgems), 1967. [An incredible example of the way (somehow) four-track, tubed recording equipment managed to capture such a LOUD/VIBRANT/ENERGETICly-dizzying sound...without ever any sense of ear-bleeding fatigue. If a system can reproduce it and not go into clipping, it has succeeded.]

Laughed out loud reading your list and running into 12x5 among some orchestral pieces. I love 12x5 (SACD) although I'm partial to the extended version of 2120 S Michigan Ave vs. your fav. Cheers!
