so unless we can talk about SAG awards the thread has nothing more to contribute. Political discussions are indeed verboten here for all of these very reasons

Not necessarily true (IMHO); Denzel's a fine actor with his share of accolades and justly due awards but this season, I think Casey Affleck did an equal or better job in Manchester by the Sea in terms of sheer acting talent. That's not political but may attract healthy debate. Affleck is a very intense young talent that seems overdue for award-winning recognition,...again, IMHO. On the other hand, we have top talent like Cranston and others who received the recognition they deserved....will be interesting to see what others contribute from this point forward.

Best Actor at the Oscars will be interesting this year. IMO Denzel could beat Casey. Hidden Figures could also pull a big upset at the Oscars

True on all points....Denzel could be chosen to beat Casey yet again. Hidden Figures, Hacksaw Ridge and a couple of others could bring some surprises though.

For late 2016/early 2017 we already have Silence, LION and several others in the wings that could prove very stiff competition for Best Actor...

Silence seems to have died a quick death.

This could and probably is one of those thought-provoking and 'deep' movies that will stand the test of time and gain critical accolades despite not making a big 'Hollywood Splash' at the box office or award shows. The subject matter is too intense, the acting and directing/producing talent too substantial, not to be (IMHO).

It's a challenging movie and not easy to watch. I thought it was very good, thought provoking, but not great. Seems to suffer from directorial overreach...

Martin Scorsese's baggage of films is incredible. He explored so many aspects of humanity; top filmmaker living today...with over half century of delivering some of the most poignant films ever. I like 'Kundun', 'The Last Temptation of Christ', 'Hugo Cabret', 'Goodfellas', 'The Departed', 'Raging Bull', 'Taxi Driver', 'The Aviator', 'The Wolf of Wall Street', 'Gangs of New York', 'Casino', 'Cape Fear', 'The Color of Money', 'Shine a Light', 'The Last Waltz', 'After Hours', ...all.

He reminds me of Steve a bit.

I can't wait to experience 'Silence'. ...In the comfort of my inner sanctum's zone.

Your son knows about one of the best greatest filmmakers living today; Marty Scorsese.
And both Marty and Thelma seems to be real nice people. I have the greatest respect to their art of filmmaking/directing/editing.
They bring us closer to some of the best cinema culture/evolution in the world.

I will get Silence on Blu-ray on May 08, 2017 ? http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=20668
I think I have all his films on one format or another. ...But mainly Blu-ray.

So your son and I have something real strong in common; we love the same greatest people in the cinema art industry here in North America, New York City (Marty's place).
