Banned for life....what's your story?

I have never been banned from an online forum until a few days ago. The forum in question for me was an a'phile forum that I rarely visited but one that when i did, most of my posts would get flamed and I was generally considered a pariah.. IMHO, a forum that I like to contribute to has enough members so that constructive and informative opinions can be formulated on a number of various topics. ( Shameless plug here).

My experience that led to my being banned went something like this: I disagreed on the merits of the various speakers that the 'leadership' felt were superior and I was unimpressed by the favorite amp/preamp of the majority of the members.

After several flaming posts....Usually my flame suit caught on fire and I was engulfed after no time at all...so much so, that after a short while, I decided that the members over there were simply too biased to see any of my points.

So, this brings me to my question...who else here has been 'banned' from an online forum and why...be honest now

Competition, hierarchy, and scapegoating. Welcome to the human race. A lot of blogs are tin horn dictatorships, and if they develop economic value, they become blood sport. I never thought I would be getting lessons in sociology when I stared participating in the internet, but there you are. It seems like most human aggregations tend toward a consolidation of belief, social competition, pitched battle, and banning.

Being banned is less a reflection on an individual than a general necessity to elevate, discriminate or eradicate.

I notice the headphone forums are dominated by young turks, who tend to be fledgling objectivists. They don't "believe" in break in and everything is about big prick measurements. Anybody who thinks otherwise tends to be mocked and trodden rather quickly.

However, there are disruptive gadflies as well whose only objective is to upset the apple cart, and they tend to be self selected for being tossed down the chute.

Just a brief comment to all readers of this thread. Davey and I have talked about starting a thread of this sort here as there is the notion of freedom of speech that needs to be considered. Nonetheless it is my intent to allow members to post their feelings and past experiences in this thread. It is not the intent of WBF to name and/or bash other fora. This is not our purpose. As a result I am going to insist that members who post here not mention the names of individuals or other fora by name but merely their thoughts and feelings. To that extent this thread will be strictly moderated. Any posts not complying with this simple guideline will be removed without warning and repeated posts by members will be issued warnings (note that I didn't say will be banned )

I was a member of a a forum.I had no problem until one day i suggested that those who were using big ss amps did not know what their speakers really sounded like. It was a down hill ride from there. A certain big dawg had decided tubes were too cumbersome.
Consider it their loss and forget it about it. If you already know everything then why discuss it.

FWIW, WBF was started with the notion that everyone's thoughts, feelings and impressions whether subjective, objective or whatever should be heard with as equal meaning as the one before it. To that extent this has lead to some uncomfortable times here between both camps in the all too obvious threads.

However I can say unequivocally that since the inception of WBF there has never been a permanent ban issued to anyone except for spammers who the administrative team work extensively 24 x 7 to keep off this site

I have only banned from one forum and that was because of my reputation and not because I said anything. Indeed, I got banned after my one and only non-controversial post.

Interestingly enough, a discussion ensued as to whether someone like me could be summarily dismissed that way. And said discussion was in public no less! A few of the mods came to my defenses but at the end, they stuck by their decision to keep me banned.

Strange thing was that there reason I went to that forum was that they kept saying I wouldn't dare coming there. So I did. And then got banned . So at the end, I felt pretty good about it.

Hi Dave,

I started a similar thread many months ago, but it also encompassed 'Being fired from your Job'.
I think it was an informative thread, and it also helped few people (like me) emotionally.

Me think that the world is a place of lot of misunderstanding, sensitivity, powertrip, ignorance, lack of compassion, lack of love, hatred, religion issues, skin issues, language issues, political issues, economic issues, social issues, emotional issues, and all that Jazz...

...In real life, all over the world, and in cyber space as well; perhaps more on the Internet (yeah I believe so).

But we are learning more stuff for the better if we allow ourselves to be well informed.
Information is KEY! ...And by being secretive we missed knowledge opportunities and better world life overall for all. I can give you several examples, but I'm sure you already know some good ones already (just check the news for the last few weeks or so).

So, I applaud Steve's decision in reopening this thread, just like Natalie Wood reopening case...
I believe it is much more positive to talk about the world that surrounds us with all the good and the bad than simply ignore it (like the Penn State University issue for example).

...There is so much more to be learned, and from the 7 billions of people around, not a single one is exactly like another one...
Many organizations are secretive in their operational ways. That's fine by me if it's for the good of all people, but it's very bad if it encourages atrocities to be committed against the true and most valid foundations of our societies.

If man believe that material and greed are real values, he's got one more thing comin' at him...

P.S. Amir, me too I got banned from a certain audio forum only because of my reputation from another forum, and which was totally unwarranted for in the first place.
At the beginning it hurts, but after you start understanding what's really goin' on, then you feel so much better.

P.P.S. I believe my above post is well formulated and in no way discredit anyone from anywhere.
And whatever other people think in their own mind is certainly not reflective of the true reality...

One of the characteristics of this forum that I really appreciate is that members and founders alike appear to keep their self-congratulatory remarks and gratuitous glad-handing to a minimum thus keeping threads intact and on track. Many fora diverge rapidly into name-calling, self-promotion or ad hominem attacks. One forum had a thread that turned into a big pile-on with people posting unsavory comments and links or photos as a way of escalating their attacks. I appreciate the restraint, dignity and decorum of members on WBF, as well as the informed and thoughtful engagement of ideas.

Twice in fact by 2 separate sites which will remain nameless but I wear my badge of honor high. Was for stupid reasons and when given the chance to be reinstated on one of the sites I said that I wasn't interested

Being a Moderator myself, I understand the need sometimes to ban a member, but its something that's taken very seriously and discussed with all of the moderating staff before a decision is rendered. On some sites it seems such discussion is non-existant and bans are implemented many times for no real apparent reason, other than a Moderator exercising powers for his own satisfaction.

I've never been banned but have had to ban a few people. It's never an easy thing. What all these folks had in common was a negative pattern of behavior. It was never because of differences in opinion and especially was never due to solitary incidents.
