Those who know me know I am a huge Fleetwood Mac fan and have followed them for the past 30 + years. I thought I knew all of their music and have heard all of their albums. Recently I purchased a record collection from a member here on WBF. As I cleaned all of the records many stood out as top shelf but then there was this album which TBH not only haven't I heard I also hadn't heard of. A Fleetwood Mac album from the very early yeas. I loved it. A far cry from the music of theirs to which we are accustomed but definitely worth a listen as I am sure it is easily found for streaming.

The photos of the band at that time were fun to see

I think you might appreciate that I saw Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green way back in 1966 (?) as an opening act for The Who. One of my favorite Mac songs was "Albatross." Guess I shouldn't have over-reacted and sold virtually all my LP's years ago. Bummer.

I was not the biggest fan of Fleetwood Mac but became a fan of their earlier stuff with Peter Green leading. Grabbed everything I could get my hands on. I like the Tea Party Concert that is available as a three album set. Good stuff.

On April 10/2017 WBF will be 7 years old. When the forum was established and all invited members joined on that day they were bestowed with the title of Founding Member. Most of the Founding Members I knew as they were friends or acquaintances. Several members however that I didn't know, I also asked to join because I felt they were knowledgeable audiophiles and would have a lot to offer members at WBF.

One member in particular was asked by me to join and become a founding member. Over the past (almost) 7 years "ack" has been not only a regular contributor to WBF but has also helped to establish what many of us call the "Boston connection" by bringing to WBF other Bostonians (mad floyd, Al M. and PeterA) who have also become regular contributors. Ack has impressed many of us (myself included) with his abilities to mod many of his components with positive results.

Over these past 7 years I have corresponded countless times with ack (Tasos) as well as talking to him on the phone. However , we had never met.

Several weeks ago Tasos reached out to me and told me that he and his wife and son were spending a week in Los Angeles on spring break and Tasos wanted to take an afternoon from his vacation and travel south to Orange County to my home so we could meet as well as listen to music on my system.

Tasos arrived yesterday afternoon with his wonderful wife and son. It was wonderful to chat over appetizers and get to know one another. I must admit that I had some degree of trepidation with that listening session as I was now playing with a complete loom of Master Built Ultra cables. In fact 5 days earlier Leif had brought over what I considered the missing piece of my cable puzzle.....a 9 meter pair of Ultra interconnects to run from my pre amp to my amp. Over the past few weeks there had been a lot of discussion here on my system blog about MB cables and some of the short comings that members were voicing due to some marketing concerns by the MB engineers. I was concerned that Tasos would not like the system or the cables but it mattered not to me in the long run as I was excited to meet him and his family

I have said so many times here that for me over all the years I have been in this hobby that the most gratifying experience was meeting new friends.

Yesterday was no exception as we spent the afternoon listening mostly to tape and vinyl and very little digital. It was a terrific afternoon.

Tasos seemed to be dialed into my ZYX Premium cartridge which was used for all but a few minutes when he asked me to a/b the ZYX Premium on the SME 3012R arm vs the Ortofon Anna on my Graham Phantom Elite 10.5" arm.

It was a very simple and quick to switch from one to the other. First off I know it wasn't a fair comparison as we were comparing the cartridges on different arms as well as different length arms. I love the Anna but in a head to head there is just IMHO no comparison as the Anna sounded very nice but very polite when compared to the ZYX Premium. In fact after about 30 seconds Tasos turned to me and said "it takes no time to figure out the difference. Can we go back to the ZYX Premium for the rest of the afternoon?"

Interestingly 2 days earlier Mike Lavigne also visited as he was near by in Del Mar. The same little test was done for Mike and he too wanted to go back to the ZYX.

We finished by listening to some digital but as both Mike and Tasos pointed out, there was no comparison as there was so much more detail when vinyl was played. We didn't get a chance to play any digital hires files from my library due to time constraints as time was now a factor and we were all going for dinner together.

All in all a wonderful afternoon. Tasos and I had some terrific conversations and I think when all was said and done Tasos liked what he heard and merely stated that he has no idea what effect the MB cables had in my system. It was all good.

It was great to finally have met Tasos as well as his lovely wife and son. This is what makes this hobby so much fun for me as the friends I have made over the years are such wonderful people.

Wow, Tasos liked the Zyx? I have the same cartridge and he has practically refused to come hear my system unless I put my Ortofon back in!

Thank you Steve for hosting us! What a class act you and Cathy are! We had a fabulous time with both of you. Friendships are one of the most rewarding things in this hobby. I'll write my detailed impressions when I get back, but indeed the system sounds wonderful and coherent, with nothing in particular sticking out. Great orchestral body, excellent highs on violin, no fatigue, great resolution, very musical. Nothing to complain about the tweeter, not attenuated either.

This is certainly the best Wilson system I have heard to date. The AF1 is one extremely well crafted piece of machinery and as dead as a 300lb slab of marble I have in my living room (part of a light fixture). I am glad the cables brought the effects you were looking for and the synergy with the system is remarkable. Will be back with more information, but for now, a warm Thanks for rolling the red carpet for us!

:DThe comparison with the Anna was simply no contest, we spent less than 30 seconds with it. Your A95 ought to also be better than the Anna.

the other thing I wonder about and I also think we have talked about before is the ZYX Universe Premium X-SB2 option that I have. When I purchased the cartridge it was recommended that based on the arm weight I was using the SB2 option would provide better sound. This might be also beneficial for you as your arm IIRC is also very light

When I asked Mehran (the importer) about different versions of the Zyx Premium, he said there was only one version that he imported.

So your cartridge has that silver top that looks like it has headlights??

That is the only version. The SB2 is an accessory which Mehran sold me with the cartridge

Yes that is my cartridge (as well as yours). The SB2 is to the right of the cartridge

Thanks for the clarification; I'll ask Mehran about it. I will say the thought of making the cartridge any heavier scares me, there is barely 2mm between the body of the cartridge and the LP (i.e. it rides really low).

IMO that's the beauty of the cartridge. It's like sliding on butter

All Universe Premiums come with the SB2 installed. ZYX cartridges are very sensitive to setup, like the Neumann there's no near or good enough it's 100% or it won't sound right that's how I set it up for you. Your McAnna is on a shorter arm and different phono cables handicapping it, you will enjoy it more given the same conditions even if it's not as smooth as the ZYX.

I agree. I guess this also suggests that a 12" arm is better

David I do remember Mehran said he was going to send the SB2 as if it didn't come with it. Thanks for clarification. So does Ian's ZYX also have the SB2

Yes, his has it too. Initially we didn't know if it came with it or not, that's why we verified. In reality you don't need the SB2 for the SME, the arm is able to work perfectly with very light cartridges. And yes, IME 12'' arms are superior to shorter ones. Leaving everything else aside even a small advantage in tracking pays off big in an ultra high end system like yours.
