Streamer to kill the big boys for under $250

Can access files direct from a NAS, plug it into your network. NO server required, also has software for direct access too.

Yes but the NAS has to run a UPNP server. This is the reason it doesn't sound as good. I can configure this unit to do the exact same. It has Jriver preinstalled on the image as well. It can be used with Jremote and NAS as the server. Only problem is doing it that way it will only "equal" the sound of the Aries, rather than surpass. I want people to be blown away by this, not merely say "ok for the price, but nothing special"

As a matter of fact you can also install a hard drive right into the unit and use without even a NAS. Or a external USB hard drive. But none of these will give you the best sound.

You don't have to be out. I am sure Mike is interested in addressing questions. Just don't say his clothes are ugly :).

He obviously thinks this is a way to scam him out of money. The facts are all laid out clearly, but it's going to take a bit more to educate people on the merits of HQplayer SRC/SDM to see the value this system will provide.

Either that or folks will just have to have the faith that I'm not reccommending this solely for the purpose of damaging my credibility.

Mike if I were to get scammed out of $250 I promise you I would not lose any sleep. Your method to achieve better sound is not for the masses. You take me for an uneducated individual, I checked out HQplayer, audiolinux and read all your posts. I am sorry but the level of effort it will take to reach your idea of audio nirvana is above my pay grade and probably 95% of other audiophiles. Not everyone is going to know how to configure HQplayer and what if it glitches? I would ask you to see what the market is buying, convenience not complicated. Feel free to have the last word but your streamer is just not for me. Thanks for your effort.

I have no idea why you think this is so difficult. The Roon integration with HQ player is right around the corner. With 15 mins of setup the whole system will work as smooth as silk using the Roon iPad app to control everything. The server and streamer will just run headless in the background. You simply just don't understand how this works. If you were here for a demo, you would say, wow that sure is easy!

He has done the work to make it pretty simple. Certainly simpler than building a CAP server and messing with Windows server that many audiophiles do.

That said, yes if you want a turnkey system, this thread or discussion is not for you. If you are contemplating building your own Windows server or go with a streamer, this is an option to look at.

Amir I only called Mike out on the patronizing responses. I have been nothing but cordial and polite in all my posts.
You have been and I was surprised to see your reaction in that post. My antenna is up on this sort of thing all the time and I honestly didn't see him patronizing you. It simply is impossible to know the knowledge level of every member reading the forum.

Anyway, let's move on and tell me what happened to your avatar! I liked it.

Your suggestion is certainly worthy of an attempt in my books (although I won't be attempting, I took in your suggestion with great interest). That said, I don't see many non-geek turn-key windows-cultured audiophiles having nearly the same level of interest.

When I finally get around to adopting a computer based audio solution, it will certainly incorporate Linux. Actually, AudioLinux is the second such OS I've seen offered over the net, the other called "Audiophile Linux".

As an aside, this thread was an excellent read, from both an educational standpoint and as a viable DIY option. AFAIC, Armin and yourself did an excellent job of "debating" the pros & cons.

IMHO it is not a question of turnkey system. For the CAPS and Windows2012/Audiophile optimizer I have excellent recipes and existing manuals to follow - from this thread I only get future hypothesis and hints! Interesting to read, but not enough to build anything with assurance.

Any Roon compatible, or HQplayer compatible streamer such as the Exasound PP, won't be for him either. As they will all require a PC based server as well. Using a NAS compatible streamer you're forced into using rudimentary UPNP mobile GUI's as well. Nothing anything like Roon.

Auralic is working on incorporating Roon into the Vega and I hear several other makers have submitted hardware.

If they do, then the setup, and server requirments will be identical to what I'm offering here. Will they also be $230? How about Intel quality hardware with 3 year warranty?

And it's not the Roon compatibly that makes the sound better here, it's the HQplayer NAA compatibility.

You buy 3 pieces of hardware, the NUC , ram stick, and USB stick. Pop ram stick in, pop USB stick in USB 3 port, connect DAC, connect power, connect Ethernet cable. Power up. Done. End of story. Find the device on the HQplayer/Roon sound device menu and choose as default. The rest is just tweaking settings in the media software.

BLIZZ, what did I tell you?

Its for you to SELL your idea…not ram it down throats, not skip steps obvious to you,,,but to hold hands and give guidance in a methodical manner. DUMB it down if needs be.

You convince people with emotions, not Vulcan logic. In this case, compassion/understanding and temperance are your friends.

Your idea may have merit and the investment is not outrageous, so encourage people to go on this adventure…don't argue..cajole.

I WILL GO ALONG WITH THIS AS A TEST, GIVEN THAT I "KNOW' YOU FOR A WHILE FROM CA.

I think I'm going to have to build these with the OS installed on internal SD card and ship without even the step of having to put the USB stick in. This may reduce confusion. But I will have to charge $400 a piece for these. But 1 less step, and no stick hanging out of it.

The thin client I get. What I need is the system requirements and setup procedure for the server running HQplayer. I have the resources to build whatever is needed, the PC build knowledge and Windows OS experience up to version 10. I have subtly in several posts asked, "Tell me how" I will build it and try it just for "shits and giggles"
