The hallmark of great tape is the ease and naturalness of sound it brings to the table.

Most probably you know about it, but your will need proper tools to take the old bearings and place the new ones - precision bearings are very fragile.

I am delighted to learn of this...international wire transfers at $35/transaction discourage smaller orders. $35 for a large purchase are acceptable.
Ki, was your order relatively large
Thanks.

It's good to hear from you, Mike :D
So, what's up with your 1/2" A820

long painful story, somewhat self-inflicted, not yet ended, and one I'm not going get into the details of. the good news is that Ki has figured it out and is getting it going again. I've owned 6 very high end tape decks (including a couple of Nagra's) and been very lucky to have never had any problems......all my good Kharma on the other 5 has now been balanced by the bad Kharma of this one A-820.

and that is all I'm going to say about it.

hello again
got a very detailed answer from Herrn Berner in Audiohouse, Switzerland regarding the bearings and field upgradeability
It even included a pdf with exploded view of the tape tension rollers in all their glory(and parts)
Acc. to him and my own judgement, I dont think it should be too complicated, given that one has the correct ring pliers and spare circlips
All bearings, except the capstan bearing, should be field upgradeable
Anyway Ill first go through his checklist to locate potentially worn bearings
best

Congratulations Leif, that looks like a true reference caliber machine. If you want to try some really nice transformers for your spud amp, I like the nanocrystaline c-cores from Tribute for lower power OPTs. Long wait times though :)

In order to look for defective bearings you can look at the wow and flutter spectra with high resolution - most lines are easy to correlate with a specific rotating part.

Ok Thxs
No I didn't
What do you mean by proper tools
Best
Leif

Unfortunately I do not know the proper names - the objective of using these tools is avoiding making any strength in the bearing balls, and extracting and placing them in the absolute vertical.
