What's Spinning Tonight?

While we are on the subject of South America, I dug up my Gato Barbieri and ripped them:

Just received my Cat Stevens LP from Acoustic Sounds and that will be playing tonight! I hope it lives up to the hype. I also received the Sonny Clark LP that was selling for a million bucks on Ebay. Well, I didn't buy that one, I bought the sealed remake copy that was pointed out to me from Audiogon.

Can't wait to hear your rxn to the Cat Stevens. Do you have an original Island to compare it to? Wonder where the hell my copy is :(

Myles-I don't have the original UK Island copy so I can't compare the two. If all of the hype is true, this copy should sound better.

All right, all right. So I listened to the Cat Stevens Tea For the Tillerman LP last night that I have been waiting for forever. Make that side 1 that I listened to. After all of the hype and the "expectation bias," I wasn't blown away. My socks didn't go anywhere either. It sounded good, I"m happy I have it, but that's about it.

Much has been said about their new vinyl formulation and how quiet their pressings are going to be. This LP doesn't prove that to me. It's quiet, but not the most quiet I have in my collection.

I'll tell you what did knock my socks off last night though. That was the LP from Sonny Clark that Myles posted the ebay link to: Cool Struttin'. I think it was Jazz Doc that posted a link to a guy on Audiogon that had a sealed 45 RPM limited edition remastered version. I snagged it right away and it showed up last night with the Cat Stevens LP. Thanks Jazz Doc. This fricking LP sounds awesome. My type of jazz for sure. I still haven't found my socks yet.

And once my socks went missing, I went ahead and put on the Benny Carter 15 ips 2 track tape. My oh my.

Back to Cat Stevens. I could be wrong, but I don't think this LP is the definitive version. Or, maybe it is and the master tape isn't the best piece of recording work known to man. Maybe you have to have that $150K Australian turntable with the tonearm that looks like it came off of a 1950s Seeburg juke box to really show its potential. I reserve the right to eat Tim's chocolate hat later, but that is where I stand as of the here and now.

It's been a long time, Mark, but I don't remember the original being anything special in terms of recording quality. Maybe this is just as good as it gets.

For those who can't get or don't have a tape machine, the 45 rpm Benny Carter Jazz Giant reissue is sensational too. Hard to believe they recorded this in their mailroom after the close of work ;)

Basie: 88 Basie St. (Pablo)
Gerry Mulligan: Big Band (Verve)
