Once in few months myself and several great buddies we try to organize ourselves to see each other and have a great weekend full of music, tube rolling, food, drinks and above all fun while covering zillions of HiFi topics. On top we also try to link those meetings to the visit to one of the many Swiss producers and thanks god Switzerland is full of them.
This weekend we had a good opportunity to link HiEnd show in Zurich with the visit and I managed to organize that we spend some time with not so widely/globally known as the rest of Swiss gang, Tobian Soundsystems.
Woooow what a discovery and what a great time we spend with a Guenter Tobian who is totally devoted audiophile guy above all and an absolute connoisseur in hifi gear. I have not seen/experience this for a while and to be honest I had a smile on my face for the entire weekend. Such a nice person to talk to, chat above everything easy going and pleasant - just great.
To back up my part above his dedication and love towards music and HiFi - he has in his personal collection more than 200.000 tubes, almost whatever you can imagine from WE gear, Altec, etc. in terms of finished products but as well drivers, etc. and overall just mind blowing. And this is just related to hardware. LPs wise collection is as well impressive so variable of materials to listen to at his place is countless.
His studio is as well super nicely done, acoustically treated with of course entire line of his gear which starts with DAC, preamp, power amps, phono and several model of speakers.
Entire chain is tube based with different tubes he deploys and at this time we had a chance to hear TOTL DAC, Phono, Pre and power amps where in first part of the chain 801 DHT was deployed with Elrog 274b recti and in power amps Elrog was a tube of choice (300b, 274b). Tube choice also depends what customers would like to have so he can adapt to their wishes.
I will not go into any tech details as his web site is more than informative, while what website is super bad at, is to convey the sheer quality and in person look of his components. It's just stunning how they look in person and you can see on them crazy/insane Swiss attention to details. Guess from this also comes the fact that all his product have lifetime warranty (except tubes of course) as he is super confident in materials, parts, manufacturing process he uses (almost everything in house).
SQ wise - just everything is aligned, calm, neutral, musical, explodes when it needs to explode and convey dynamics and palpable above all. We can always find something we don't like or would like to have more or less but this system is a total no brainier for somebody who can afford it and have a one stop solution to musical nirvana.
I hope there will be a chance to visit Guenter soon enough as apparently several new models are in pre-launch phase so this could be a nice excuse to steal again few hours of his time.
I'll illustrate with few pictures from the place below:

MA 100 will accommodate different tubes from 45/46 all the way to 211 in push pull mode? That's flexibility.

Tubes types are not swappable ie you can't roll them but when ordering amps customers can choose between 300b, 46 and 242/211 tubes depending on their taste.

Last picture comparison of current top model SC8 vs SC1 (size wise). I hope to give it a listen as soon as possible.

I am a very happy owner of the Tobian 12 FH speakers, IMO the best speakers I have had in my listening room by far.

Superb craftmanship and Mr Tobian is a very friendly and competent person.

Since I met Gunter T. last year I sincerely fell in love with his products both visually and most importantly in the way they portray music. Since then I was silently craving to lay hands on some of his gear and from several reasons, mainly from practical reasons, I was aiming for his preamp. MA100 impossible to get both financially and from space perspective, DAC wise I really love Pac (I adore tube rolling) and since I'm a good/great preamp in the system believer, choice was quite obvious and hence SC12s idea started to boil. Somewhere at the end of the first lockdown when depression kicked in due to C19 s..t, I decided that time is now as we live only once and I quickly agreed with Gunter all details. After a month or so after ordering i got a call from Gunter that my Porsche silver blue anodized front SC12 is awaiting to pick it up. Tubes wise I have WE422A (can use 5u4g in general) rectifier in it and in the output stage it runs exclusively 12A DHTs or 112A for that matter. Currently I have engraved base ST Philco 12A in but G. already told me has some special ones awaiting for me to pick them up. Built is...well just uber crazy attention to detail quality Swiss stuff and I guess it will outlive me so my kids will be happy one day.
As I had no slouch tube preamps before this one for example ModWright LS36.5DM, many ARC ones finishing with Ref6 I can easily say after like 100h of burn in that this one indeed builds up on strengths of Ref6 and is giving me extreme pleasure while listening. Its super super musical, free flowing, fatigue free, tons of details, phenomenal staging and all nitty gritty stuff is present even while listening at low levels - for example much more than with Ref6 and it can engage me even when the intention is to have some music just as a background (to be honest to distress from kids screaming and running around the flat:)).
Thing which is nice is that mates well with Pacific with RK242 inside so I'll need to test it also with RD27AS but I assume it will be a killer one as well.
All in all I would say an endgame preamp for me...

And yes - would love to try his 10FH or 12FH speakers at home....might be a thing for the future... 5D8B7452-5549-4EA5-A4CA-6514A8EC42FE.jpeg 3E7FC461-28E9-4D06-B7D8-84D55CD056CF.jpeg 26C3715E-C3BF-408A-95F6-041B3C92D6FD.jpeg 0D711F3D-EEA1-417F-9F30-FD7199F41A6A.jpeg D1ECC6F3-9776-42A5-9D88-6916F3E59AD8.jpeg 9A0808F6-A941-40BE-AFCD-2E0EE42ECBD3.jpeg

Just quick update on the preamp...almost two months passed since I started using it and I would say that now its finally fully broken in. I did some small tricks in terms of tube rolling on rectifier position and as I had a KR 5u4g RK floating around i tried it in preamp and in this unit proved to yield best results so far. Gives additional kick and dynamics vs 422A without loosing on musicality and with tweaking the DAC with RD27 it gave the overall best result. System sounds never better and I'm really glad I decided to make this move....

All in all I would say an endgame preamp for me...
What a terrible liar I am :) . As it always turns out, there is something better around the corner, more alluring and in this sport sounding better. As I do totally love units from Tobian Sound Systems in every aspect, when I saw and heard his new SC12 preamp in his studio, I kind of knew I need to have it sooner than later.
So yesterday was a D day for the units to come home. I won't write much about the sound as its brand new and needs quite some time to fully break in but from the get go this is another league in every way.
Just as a starter I'll write few things about the pre and Gunters philosophy behind it. Some of the things which are of the outmost importance to him

- Extremely potent external power supply with tube rectification
- Usage of only DHTs in output
- Silver wiring
- Autoformer volume control with extremely large permalloy e-core with over 220Henry providing extremely linear frequency range from 10Hz to 30000Hz
- All output transformers as well as interstage transformers are equipped with extra large M or E cores made of permalloy
- Signal path is fully transformer coupled without capacitors and fully symmetrical
- Controls and selectors are custom handmade for them
- The real kick is the output transformer which has an extra large E-core and a winding of over 350 Henrys
- Filament heating of the DHTs is completely passive without boards or voltage regulator. Its done with pure choke filtering in-house made
- All is clean point to point soldering done by hand
- Usage of only paper in oil capacitors of the best quality with huge reserves that can not be big enough

All in all those two monsters have jointly above 60kg so my back today is not really in a perfect shape but who cares - ears are important :).
Output tubes which I can use in this one are 801a/VT62/VT25 or 10Y. I started the journey with Hytron VT62 and Gunter also supplied Sylvania 10Y so I can roll a bit and see the result, while rectifier of choice is 274b. Currently i run ACME but will be changed by Taka 274b quite soon I would say - anyhow I'm not in a rush during break in time. Units look and feel is, to my taste, perfect with now standard Swiss precision (yeah I'm in love).

As I said I'll write a few more words regarding sound after few weeks of burn in time and for time being several pictures...
