Regarding the frequency response "flatness" of the vinyl recording medium...

Has anyone ever reported the results of the WHOLE RECORD/PLAYBACK CHAIN from cutting a record using a sweep signal input to the record amp (from an impeccable audio generator) thru playing the record back and "recording" the result of the output from the phono preamplifier?

Would bet that the result would be MANY Db of VARIATION across the audio bandwidth. And how much of this is on the cutting side; record amp / cutting stylus, versus the playback side; playback cartridge / phono preamp?

Thank You

Presumably, you would also include the mic, the tape / recording, the processing... among the variables?

You can do it using a test record with pink/white noise track and a spectrum analyzer. For example AP test record. Alternately you can use AM software and it’s own test record. I did both. In any case it’s hardly telling anything about the final performance. A simple Benz Micro cartridge can measure within +- 0.9dB while a stone body Koetsu within +- 4 dB.

THANKS Mtemur - hadn't thought of the white noise record / spectrum analyzer approach - and thanks for the interesting results

Gregm - no; only thinking about the response getting TO the record amp and FROM the phono pre.
