Hot Pressings

I know Tony Williams' "Emergency". I consider my copy of Tony Williams' "Emergency" a friend of mine. Spectrum Road is no Tony Williams.

One of the best old pressings I've recently acquired - Cal Tjader's Huracan - Direct-to-Disc Limited Edition on Crystal Clear Records.

There are three different pressings - the white vinyl, black vinyl, and a "Collector's Edition". Do NOT get the last one. The best is the white vinyl, but the black is also very good. The Collector's Edition Tribute Recording is likely to be a reissue as dynamics and resolution are curtailed.

i had all the crystal clear D2D, multiples of most titles and i found the the opposite to be true  i much preferred the black stuff. i had a new copy of Laurindo Almeida's virtuoso guitar on white vinyl that was so unplayable i had Laurindo sign the jacket at one of his gigs shortly after the LA4 disbanded. its out there with an inscription to me, somewhere in collector land when i sold off most of my vinyl the first time :(

The Cal Tjader is the only Crystal Clear I have in black vinyl. I'll try and hunt down some of my other titles in black vinyl and do a comparison. However, given the huge quality difference between two of the black ones I have, I wonder if their white vinyl will show the same variability. It is far harder to read the matrix numbers on the white vinyl.

Here are some I like:

ZZ Top, Deguello
Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon, German Pressing
Pink Floyd, The Wall, Japanese pressing
Neil Young at Massey Hall
The Beatles, UK pressings prefer one box EMIs or earlier but some two boxes sound very nice
Dire Straits, pretty much anything on Vertigo
Dead Can Dance, recent MFSL reissues on LP especially Into the Labyrinth
Led Zeppelin II, RL mastering
Frank Sinatra, The Concert Sinatra, early Reprise or MFSL, both sound nice
Heart, pretty much anything on Kendun

Hot off the press - the first FIM LP. Don't miss this one, guys.

I have a K2HD of that one. Good sound as is common on FIM.

Myles; is this a commercially available LP??

If you like Hank Jones, it's worth seeking out his recordings with the Great Jazz Trio on East Wind records. My favorite is "Direct From LA"

When I moonlighted at Chesky Records, David Baker (one of the great recording engineers) sat in on a session. Very nice man who went on to produce and record some amazing jazz albums. David Chesky said he was one of the best in the business. David did not say things like that lightly. He worked at the Eighty-Eights label until his passing and those Hank Jones SACDs he did there are some of the best sound I have heard on jazz. I'm not sure which are on LP though. I believe he trained the existing engineer as well or at least passed on some top practices. His work is also outstanding.

Think David also did some work with Chad!

Yes, I think you are right. Look for his name Myles...I have never heard a bad record with his name on it. He was big at Sony for a while.

I think David did some of the early recordings like Little Hatch for AP.

Since I have the bolded, I concur!:)!

To add:

Stevie Wonder Talking Book - MFSL Silver
Frank Sinatra - Live At The Sands - MFSL
Kate Bush - 50 Words For Snow - Fish People (UK)...NOT the U.S. Anti pressing

Thanks, but I differ on the Sinatra. The vocals and band balance is off compared to original pressings. Check out the DVD-Audio disc for a better presentation. A rare miss by Mofi.

I'm really enjoying the Bush/Clements/Blake bluegrass album on flyingfish, especially the cut 'Sauerkraut 'n solar energy.'
Still findable for non-crazy money. Man those guys could play!
