Hot Pressings

The Shins "Port of Morrow" - I bought this one with some trepidation. James Mercer has completely revamped the Shins. It's not as edgy as prior Shins records but excellent in its own right. Fabulous sonics.

The new MusicMatters release of Herbie Hancock's "Empryean Isles" is spectacular. If the series is ending they are going out on a high note.

Features one of the most recognizable jazz tunes of all time "Cantaloupe Island"...here's a fun video version:

Slightly off topic, but the The Shins - Phantom Limb video is very clever; the song is very impressive, too. It's beyond me how people can be that clever.

Collection of the hottest of the hot

Clockwise from top:

1) White original limited release
2) 45rpm half-speed mastered
3) Japanese Super Analog Disc
4) The two original master tapes
5) First pressing

In the middle - first Proof Record from Jacob Boethius' collection.

Hadn't played this in a while and had forgotten how terrific the music is. It's Art Pepper with Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" band and the sonics are spectacular:

Worth paying up for an original. I own the stereo version: Contemporary S7573. Competitive, if not better than the recent MusicMatters Blue Note reissues.

I don't remember the 45 rpm? Sure it wasn't just the later JVC 1/2 speed remaster?

Looking at the notes on the master, the right channel is inverted relative to the left. Then it looks like everything is 180 deg out of phase?

None of us had seen that before either - until Winston pulled out of his vaults. It was a 45rpm double disk.

It was a trick audiophiles used to improve the efficiency of the power supply. Looks like recording engineers used it too. I've mentioned this tweak before - invert the pins on the cartridge output, and then invert the speaker leads at the speaker. Puts all the electronics on one channel inverted and in a qualifying system is quite the spectacular tweak.

Thanks, Mark. Many of the Contemporary re-issues are very very good indeed. I've only got the original and re-issue of Double Play (C3537) and I enjoy the 2011 re-issue more because of significantly lower noise. Others of the Contemporary re-issues that I thought were very good are Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Session and Ornette Coleman Something Else.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle :)

Was it on the Proprius label or was it a Japanese issue? Or something Winston did? :)

Yes seem to remember you mentioning that. Have to give it a try!

Two of my favorite Contemporary recordings are Benny Carter: Jazz Giant and The Poll Winners: Barney Kessel with Shelly Manne and Ray Brown. Lester Koenig and Roy DuNann------------>highly underrated!

+1!

Well I finally snagged a good quality originally pressing of the Stones' "Sticky Fingers" COC 59100. Truly like hearing the music for the first time and light years better than the late '70's reissue (COC 39105). Well worth the price.

Two more hot pressings and one to avoid...

Something old Benny Carter "Swinging in the 20's". Great players, terrific music, even better recording. Get the original on Contemporary, not the OJC reissue.

Something new: Joe Walsh "Analog Man". As the man explains 'It's been 20 years, I've got something to say'

Something to avoid: Spectrum Road. How could this miss? Vernon Reid (Living Colour), John Medeski, Cindy Blackman Santana and Jack Bruce. Well it could. Awful music on a crappy pressing.

I want to know this as well.....:D

Color me curious too. I didn't pick it up 'cause despite the title, was a digital recording.

The recording is excellent. A very good but not perfect pressing. As for the music, I like it but I've always been a Joe Walsh fan.

Nuff said...I'm on it!:D

Was just listening to the James Gang and Joe Walsh on my Nano while working out today :)

jazdoc,

Do you like Tony William's Emergency? Spectrum Road is supposed to be a sort of homage to that man's music...
