Hot Pressings

couple more, hope they are not blithering insights into the obvious:
Diana Krall, The Girl in the Other Room, particularly side A.
Get Yourself a New Broom, Guy Van Duser, particularly the cut 'I'm Coming Virginia'
and, finally,
Ray Brown and Jimmy Rowles, 'Tasty', particularly the cut 'The Night is Young...".

Thanks, but I differ on the Sinatra. The vocals and band balance is off compared to original pressings. Check out the DVD-Audio disc for a better presentation. A rare miss by Mofi.

I agree with Lee on this one - Live at the Sands on mofi is nothing to write home about. Whereas the DVD-A is a great high-rez recording, and far better than the Redbook CD. This is one album I demo frequently at shows, and when no one is watching, the LP is on the t/t while the high-rez files are playing. I love the banter between Sinatra and the audience.

I have an early pressing - not sure if it is an original pressing, but while the music is fabulous, the sound is disappointing.

I have an original mono pressing and while not a 'hot pressing', it is definitely a significant step up from the original stereo or recent Mo-Fi

I don't have the original to compare to, so I will take your word for it. Maybe it's good that I dont, as I do enjoy this recording and don't really find fault with it.

John, if you get a chance to buy the Sinatra DVD-Audio or hear it at a friends, you may be surprised how good it is. It feels like a time machine back to old Vegas. The orchestra presence is more alive and nearly equal to Sinatra's vocals like a live event. The MFSL is still good but the orchestra is in the background.

And what an orchestra it was - Count Basie and His Orchestra, conducted (and arranged) by Quincy Jones.

I'll see if I can get the DVD/CD combo, and yes...what an orchestra! Thanks for letting me know about DVD/CD guys!

Not the DVD/CD combo John, the DVD-Audio disk.Elliot Mazer went back to the original 4 track master tapes to create a 5.1 channel mix as well as a 24bit/192kHz high rez track that is simply awesome.

It's a bit pricey if you can get it, I'm afraid.

My mistake....I did mean DVD-Audio. After seeing that price however I think I'll just live with the substandard Mofi pressing.

I found mine for $8 at a used CD store. One of my better finds.

The ABC Metal Masterings are a "secret" we know in Asia, but I have not seen one here in the US, nor have I heard anyone talking about them. I have a couple, and they all sound wonderful.

The other day I was just playing these series of ABC Records produced by Simon Tsui in NY and engineered by Mark Levinson in 2006, and I remembered this thread. They sound fabulous and vocals are lovely. I never heard Kenny Rogers sang When I Fall in Love till this one, and the selections of the 30 Years Tubes are fantastic, including Louis Armstrong Blueberry Hill, Bacharach's Close to You, What a Wonderful World by Tony Bennett and KD Lang. How I wish they had more titles. I only have these 2. Impeccable vinyl made in Germany on Direct Metal Master Cut. It even has a free CD enclosed. :D

I wish they'd do a full KD Lang LP.

Favorite cut from the 30 years tube is the religious song "Just a Little Walk with Thee." But just wondering, any truth to the rumor that these splendid reissues are no longer available due to copyright violations by the producers?

Yeah, by Joe Nichols. My wife heard it from outside the room, peered in, and asked me, what, you're in the church ministry now? :D

I didn't hear of such rumors and if it were through, there should be lawsuits all over. But inside the liner notes, there are pictures of master tapes, which ML purportedly used to make these recordings. It's either this reason, or that ML always flies around like a butterfly and never stay put in his work. BTW, I still have his original ML Recordings 'Jazz at Longwharf', cut at 45 RPM with his brother Doug on piano and ML himself on bass.

While I feel the newer Analogue Productions Nat King Cole reissues betters this "best of reissue'" the difference is not that great and it's only in the ABC reissue that you find great remasterings of the wonderful songs "a Nightingale Sang At Berkeley Square" and "The More I See You."

Hmm...I should compare the AP of The Very Thought of You (1 cut) to that in the ABC Nat King Cole. From what I remember, the ABC beat my original silver label mono of When I Fall in Love, and is even slightly better than the DCC NKC's Love is the Thing.

The ABC is a touch brighter and bit grainier compared to the ultra smooth analogue productions reissue.

I heard that rumor too. Given the huge range of music on Maestro Classics and 30 Years Tube, I wouldn't be surprised. After working with Winston Ma and hearing his stories, I realize how tremendously difficult it is to secure reproduction rights.
