* Did you watch a film last night (on Blu or DVD), and what was it? *

Last night I revisited this 'older' (1997) flick; directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, with music by John Williams, and cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma.
- Director of photography: Robert Fraisse. ....And based on an incredible true story.

Last night I re-watched this :::

-- 60960_large.jpg

* The Sound (DTS-HD MA 7.1 "Near Field" mix audio soundtrack) is very good. I don't mind at all that they do more "Near Field" mix like this.
The dialog is clear, and the surrounds are distinct and enveloping the same, and the .1 LFE channel is tastefully done.
And the music is not overbearing, but flows easily with all the rest by staying where it belongs; in the background. ...Some nice passages occasionally, smooth.

** The Picture (3D) is very very colorful, and very very black & white.
It looks like they added more new colors on the canvas palette.
Some scenes are very cool in 3D (impactful), and at other times quite bland and out of sync with the actors (cardboard backgrounds).
-> I think it was made more for the kid's stuff effects than a nice/smart/smooth realistic 3D depth of field.
What bugs me the most is the moving action, which is blurred; even on my 3D plasma display. This is where I believe that the most important improvement can be made in movie motion pictures. ...2D, and 3D.

*** The reviewer (click on the picture cover) prefers the 2D version over that 3D one.
I have yet to see the 2D version, because Disney did something very different and unusual this time around with this Blu-ray title release (quite irritating)!
But I won't go into politics, economics, religions, greed, and all that very bad jazz that corrupts America and its surroundings.
- I'll get the 2D version eventually, and Disney won!

It is quite something sometimes what a simple movie could do to the social movements of the Internet.
And Disney knew exactly that here. ...But they went ahead. Why? Because! Because they had a vision, a financial goal, and they had to stick with it by sticking it to us that way! ...Welcome to the new world of OZ! ...Where emotions are only illusions. ...And where money is master and wizard of all things. ;)

It does make me feel sad though, because I had higher esteem for Disney before, even if they are the greediest of the bunch (among other Hollywood movie studios).
...Because the artistic side won for me, over money. ...But this time around their greed was simply out-of-control and dis-balanced/dis-functional/dis-proportionate.
I truly hope they won't repeat that one with us! ...They can keep their coupons and redeeming points in their own inter-galactic space without impeding in people's financial freedom.
I think that we have enough dictators right now on our planet! ...Time to share the love, and get rid of the control of power and money and people! :b

Hey, and if you feel to share your opinion please be my guest, and be free to do so.

We all liked the new "Oz" for family fun. The 2D picture was very good. The sound was superb. The labeling of "near-field mix" is actually a mistake only in them calling it that. Many soundtracks have been mixed with smaller playback spaces in mind, but were not labeled as such, according to some reviews I read.

I read the comments of the person who did (pro mixing/recording engineer) this particular audio soundtrack of Oz (Near Field), and according to his sayings it was done for smaller rooms in mind.
...Not PC rooms, but 'near-field' living rooms.

I know exactly where's the link; interested? :b
BTW, the few posts of his are contained in Ralph Potts' review of 'Oz the Great and Powerful' - 2D & 3D, from over at AVS, where he gave 100 for the Sound, 100 for the 3D Picture, and 100 for the 2D Picture.

Yes, the sound was mixed for smaller listening spaces. The controversy occurred when they actually "called" it a near-field mix. Concern was immediately raised that the track had been modified from its original form. After listening to it, such concerns should be put to rest, because it was spectacular.

True, that is the first time I saw that on Blu-ray. ...Funny thing too is that this Blu defaults to the stereo audio track!
...You have to manually select that DTS-HD MA 7.1 (Near Field) audio soundtrack yourself!

Anyway, I agree with you the Audio is splendid; no complaint here from me. ...I give it 93.
And the 3D Picture is fine too. ...I give it 85.
The film? ...I give it 66.
Extras? ... 0 (zero). ...That's for my 3D version.

- And that is why I am going to also purchase the 2D version, mainly for Picture's improvement. ...The extras are just that; extras. :b

One of these days Alice I'm going to write elaborate/technical and emotional value merits of all the films I watch and re-watch on Blu-rays only.
...Watch out! ;)

Nah, nobody is interested here at WBF. ...Or maybe there are a few .... :b

And because we are on the subject of 'Oz The Great And Powerful' 2D & 3D versions; I'll share some more with you here at WBF.

Here are two reviews; the Blu-ray 2D version, and the 3D Blu-ray version, and by the same reviewer, Ken Brown, who used to write for High Def Digest. ...I'd say Ken is one of the best ones out there, and I'm quite familiar with his reviews, for several years.
...Ralph Potts too, from AVs Forum.

Now, I'll leave it up to you to make your own assessment; just be great observers, and I really mean that (even write the scores to make sure).
{Click on both picture covers for a review of each.}

HINT: Movie score, Audio score, Extras score (the 3D version has none, unless you have a connected computer to your BD player).

I can give you hundreds more examples like that; not only from this movie reviewer but also from several more on that site.
You might say to me; mistakes happen! ...Oh yeah, they do happen, and quite often too. ...Too much for my taste though.

Anyway, just don't trust one reviewer; and when you'll get to know them better you'll know who to trust more.
...And you'll know some of the agendas behind the reviews too, just like in pro audio reviews.

Hey, I'm not making that up; the scores speak for themselves, and I'm one of the most avid readers of that site.
...And not only that site, but others too.

It's not bad, but it's not good either. I guess it is what it is, but it certainly is NOT the Best!

Which movie is this?

Every time I post a movie picture cover, just click on it; you'll get the title and all that jazz. ... 'Safety Last!'

* On this particular one I agree with you; it wasn't so easy to know the title (inside the clock).

P.S. It's a silent film; put a music album suitable for it. ...Or listen to the music scores (2) already recorded on the Blu.
{When I made my own first film in grade 12, it was also a silent film; I projected it while playing a music album (vinyl), on both sides.}

<<<>>> Silent films could be even more powerful than the latest Hollywood blockbusters with all the channels (7.1) screaming at you.
Why? Because you are much more concentrated on the real stuff (onscreen action), and just a simple music score could go a very long way,
like just a simple solo piano mono audio track for example. ...Charlie Chaplin and other silent classic flicks.
Also, I love Black&White flicks. ...My favorite pictures (photographs) are also the black & white ones.

Good to know! And might convenient I might add.

Thanks!

Watched the first hour of 'Empire of the Sun' which is Spielberg's most underrated movie IMO. Great transfer.
