CES 2011 picture thread

Aren't the unnamed speakers whose presenter so irritated you the Morel Fat Ladies recently (glowingly) reviewed in TAS?

That is the one indeed. Note that my beef was with the attitude of the person manning the suite in a show where people could not be nicer to me. Of note, my badge was that of my company (Madrona Digital) and had the word in yellow label "Buyer." This meant that I was a good potential to carry anyone's product. In that sense, getting treated like way I did when everyone else was so open going as far as detailing every aspect of their design (see how Magico had the internal structure on display), was just bad form. I mean no matter how you feel, when someone says "thank you" you say "thank you" back.

For all I know, the speakers are nice. I could not hear it because the same person was in deep discussion with someone else in the sweet spot, and not playing anything for anyone else walking in (another thing that annoys me :) ).

As to reviews from TAS being positive, I did a quick search and landed on this "review" with this interesting remark at the end from Jonathon: http://www.avguide.com/blog/morels-statement-loudspeaker-the-fat-lady

"When all is said and done, not yet. Despite their considerable excellence in the midband and treble, I can't quite get past The Ladies' elevated low end. Their bass doesn't bother several of my friends, who think The Ladies are the best they've heard in my room. But it bothers me just enough to keep me from endorsing The Ladies without qualification. However, I'm happy to report that something is being done about this by Morel as I write. Russell feels that something has gone awry in the XO of my pair--a part may be out of spec or mis-spec'd is his guess. If that's the case, it's an easy fix. Once he brings the same exemplary quality (and quantity) to the bass that he has already brought to the rest of the frequency spectrum, I may, indeed, hear the fat lady sing after all. I'll let you know in a week or so."

Then this,

"I'm actually waiting to comment in detail on The Girlz until the revised crossover has been installed, since, at the moment, there is simply too much bass for my taste (good bass but too much). I can say this, however. As they now stand The Fat Ladies are not "dryish" and "uninvolving." In fact, they are rich and gorgeous. But then I'm absolutely certain that the pair I've been listening to is substantially different (particularly in the bass and lower mids, due to the change in the crossover) than the pair you and I heard at CES, which was a bit on the lean side (though I still liked 'em). Stay tuned."

And,

"I am delighted to report that the new woofer crossover that Morel's chief designer Russell Kauffman installed this past weekend in the Fat Ladies has apparently cured its bass problem. I've just begun to listen, and the caps and coils in the new crossover still need to break in for about 100 hours, but the difference is already dramatic and entirely positive. The 12dB plateau from 20Hz-150Hz has clearly been leveled out and the speaker now sounds of a piece from top to bottom. I'll have more to say in a separate thread."

Since I am annoyed at them :), let me harp on them having to fix high-end speakers that are "out of spec" this way. Who knows if they sent the same part or tuned the bass down to please Jonathon.

That hits to the heart of the matter, doesn't it? Unless you're an engineer, you're never quite sure what you get.

Lee

OTOH, I think most (almost all?) who spend $30,000 are going to want it to sound "right" to them; I would certainly complain noisily and frequently in that case.

What are the chances that a customer gets a new crossover by just complaining that the bass doesn't sound right in their room? I would say zero :).

For something like a Polk Audio speaker, that may be. OTOH, I'll bet if you complained to Dave Wilson about it it would be fixed. For everything in between, I guess I just don't know.

This is not unbeknownst. Look back at the early issues of TAS, specifically the early reviews of the Magnepan and Infinity speakers, and how Jim and Arnie were sending Harry different/new xovers based on the review.

It is more than OK. That's a great video and as a bonus, liable to make you friends with the site co-owner. Steve, are you watching? :D

I did see the video. The color of those X-2's was Aspen Silver which was the color of my first pair of X-2's

How long did it take to assembler your Wilson and how many people did it Steve? Seeing how yours is upstairs, it must have added another element of excitement :).

Nice Amir. My little point and shoot won't come close to your pix but I have several hundred so it will take me a bit to post them

Nice photos! Where are the CES 2012?
I spent all morning selecting the right ones, editing them and am waiting for upload. Then comes 2-3 hours of linking to them. Man, this business of reporting on shows is so much work!!!

I have 106 images to post :(.

I have over 300. Just finished color correcting them all

You are both terrific guys Amir/Steve - thanks for taking care of keeping WBF content so engaging!
