Artists that you just don't/can't connect with!

I have tried a lot to like Coltrane at the Vanguard, i love Coltrane, but this one has not turned me on yet, Dianna Krall is loosing me (I am sure she doesn't care) and The Killers do not light my fire as Oasis, Travis or NIN do.

I'll have to add to the Kate Bush WTF crowd. Never understood the fans other than she was a hottie. But then I like Laurie Anderson, go figure.

Forgot about this thread (almost).

What???? No love for Kate Bush? She's one of the most talented people in music. My only gripe is that she doesn't record enough.

I'm serious about Kate Bush when I said that, but I understand that some don't like her. It's like me and Jennifer Warnes......she's ok, but I don't get the hype.

So I went out and picked up on vinyl The Grateful Dead - American Dream. Not ever having owned any of their recordings I thought it was time to give them a listen. I'm sorry I did...not my cup of tea at all and now I know why I never owned their stuff before.

I saw my one and only Grateful Dead Concert in Toronto many decades ago.

ALL I can remember is the entire auditorium was emanating those wonderful herb odors. It seemed as if one song ran into the next and by 0100 Jerry was still singing. Everyone could care less :)

My favorite two are Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. There's something wrong if you don't like those two albums ;)

That described pretty much every rock concert I went to in the '60s and '70s. There was always a cloud of smoke hanging over the Garden--so even if you didn't smoke--you'd get a contact high ;) BTW, Dylan wasn't much different :) The of course there was Bowie who was so strange one didn't know if they were stoned or not!

Maybe I didn't get it because I listened to American DREAM and not American Beauty! LOL! oops...sorry for the typo!

I'm in your camp too on this one!

Hey, hey...what's with Kate hate.:p Multi-talented singer, perfomer, dancer, writer......and a hottie too!

Bob Dylan. I have a friend who couldn't believe that I wouldn't care much for Bob's music that he constantly played record after record of Dylan's 'hits' for me and in the end, I still couldn't connect with his music.

I have to go with Dylan too. Great songwriter, but no chops at all...

I'll take Kate Bush to Bjork any scandinavian 24 hour day.

Fascinating how there are some artists that provoke such diametric views! For me, Neil Diamond is thumbs up, Hot August Night over a system on song is an absolute scorcher, Kate Bush again needs the system in good shape, otherwise her voice and album production are hard work. Bruce Springsteen never did it for me, same for John Mellencamp; Dylan and U2 are tolerable.

Yeah I am with you on this, definitely talented, oh well looks like we are the only fans :)

The one I really cannot connect with is... Morrissey (had a songwriting partner for these really uncheerful songs).
I never understood what any Brit fan (not sure how well known in North America he is) heard that they enjoyed.
Some of his classics include; "We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful" and "Your're the One For Me Fatty".
Bloody socialist :)
Actually can add The Smiths to that as well - which he was also a member of.

Cheers

Hey Orb,

She's got a new LP coming out in November with all new material ...am soooo looking forward to it. Also, if you haven't, pick up the Audio Fidelity release of Hounds of Love.....stunning!

Funny you should mention Morrissey and The Smiths. One of my best buddies is a huge fan and one of his passions is to collect whatever he can from either in any format. Like you...I don't get him either. In fact, and although I've always been a fan of the British music scene, that period kinda left me cold. Way too avant-garde and non-sensical most of the time.

Oh, and here's another one I don't cotton to much to either...

Although undoubtedly talented....Leonard Cohen just depresses the hell out of me with that voice(?) and the interpretations of them thar lyrics. I usually need a good hit of Bobby McFerrin to get me back to sanity after Mr. LC!:p
