Lloyd,

If you're not limited to a "computer" solution, I would highly recommend you look at Sonore. I've tried at least 3 variation of Mac based servers; Mac Pro with Lynx AES16e, Mac Mini, and Macbook Pro. I've also tried just about all the Mac based software (except Amarra); Pure Music, Fidelia, Bitperfect, Decibel. I'll tell you that my Linux based Sonore server sounds much better than anything else I've used. The only negative is that music is played back on internal hard drives. I would prefer a streaming solution via NAS but that's not an option.

I use a Mac Mini with an external 2 TB hard drive. We compared to the the Krell EVO505 here. I'll agree with the statement that a memory-cache played file sounds superior to any mechanical transport I've heard. I'm going to wait a little bit now and let the high-res/DSD playback implementations settle out and let more manufacturers jump on the bandwagon before I buy my next DAC. Currently, I'm using the Calyx Audio DAC 24/192 and am very happy with its performance/price ratio.

Thanks, Frantz, Lee and Catastophe! Sounds good! Starting to form my opinion about my 2 options. Stay tuned! Thanks again.

For what it's worth, I use a Drobo for many, many years now, with complete reliability. I'm up to 2x2gb + 2x3gb HDs on it.
