When it comes to room acoustics, how do you find someone you trust?

It doesn't have to be an eyesore. Here's just a couple of examples from GIK Acoustics:

You're looking at it from the wrong set of eyes :)

That's kind of oversimplifying the situation many audiophiles face :) How many people have a "dedicated" audio room that they can do anything they want to? Plus, most of the room Rx stuff looks like crap IMHO.

It's not oversimplifying. Just start off with little things that don't cost anything, like getting the room/system layout as symmetrical as possible. Moving draperies or opening/closing blinds. Hell, they even have room treatments now that are disguised as artwork! A big one.... moving speakers or your listening position.... even if it's just for a listening session. Those things can have a major impact!

Obviously you don't live in NY where it's the interior designer tells you where to place your speakers :)

Seriously, I don't consider what you're talking about as room treatment. That system setup 101. I'm talking about more sophisticated means to achieve better sound.

Myles:

I always assumed you had a set up like Victor Goldstein. Two apartments in one building - one for audio and the other for living. :D
