From reading history, my take on religion is it is a purely cultural thing.
Nothing has changed. In the Book of Genesis (Genesis 3:12), Adam blames God (and Eve) for "the woman you gave me" when confronted by God about eating of the apple tree which was the only no-no God gave them. Shedding personal responsibility has been around as long as mankind. It's never our fault and God is as convenient to blame as anyone else since he is not physically present to defend Himself.
God is not the problem with this world. Mankind owns 100% of everything that is wrong.
If you don't use a parachute, does that mean you would do a skydie?
From reading history, my take on religion is it is a purely cultural thing. There are many religions and gods.
This song, though, (reflecting the Christian religions) I think, really reflects what everyone has thought at some point in their life, even if they prescribe to one of the worlds religions.

Agnostic.
The sixties and seventies had rebellion, the eighties and nineties had nuvo angst. I call it whining while dressed to the nines.
Hard to tell if XTC meant it or did it just because it was in vogue. That has always been my problem with this song. The song itself is quite powerful.
