Guys-

Anyone interested in an hour to help me setup a VPI Traveler with Zu Cart? I live near Beverly Hills.

Cheers,

Keith, being in Chicago I can't help with the setup but I'd like to make a suggestion to you before arranging to have someone come out for assistance. The Zu cartridges are very high mass designs, so you might want to check with VPI first to ensure that the standard counterweight supplied with the Traveler will work with that cartridge. It might require a heavier counterweight and if you provide VPI with the mass of the Zu cartridge they should be able to advise you accordingly. Best of luck and good listening!

Thanks Bill. We got it to track a few months ago, but then my tonearm broke. Let's just say dealing with VPI hasn't been fun either. I tried to set it up last night and couldn't get it to track, go figure. Hope to find an analog expert to help once again.

Take it to Brooks Berdan in Monrovia. They are VPI specialists.

How does a tonearm break and what on earth are you doing wrong that you can't get the arm/cartridge to track?? Something is seriously amiss.

Twisting the wrong piece on the gimballed arm.

And pray tell what piece would that be? I have set up tables since I was a teenager and I have never broken a tonearm nor have I ever snapped off a cantilever that I had to blame on the maid.

I haven't played with the arm but in talking with Harry, there is something one can do to break the arm. IIRC it has to do with which piece you try and move to set the VTF.I think they ran into the problem with the first couple of arms, then adjusted the instructions. But of course that works on the premise one reads the instructions :(

I guess Keith found that part then.

Actually, and I apologise for not following up, the arm broke while simply putting the tone arm back after playing a record- had nothing to do with twisting the counterweight (which you are instructed not to twist)

And my dealer couldnt get the Zu to track either, so guess vpi changed arms mid production. Also, there are no heavier counterweights available. My VPI will be for sale shortly- moving on.

The Zu starts as a high mass/low compliance Denon IIRC? You need a high mass arm in this case. Did you check the arm's resonance point? Also did the dealer by any chance try another cartridge in the arm?

If so and you decide to go another route, you're still going to be limited or need to carefully choose your next arm.

My next arm is an Origin Live Encounter and I've been told I won't have any issues. Ortofon could be another brand I decide to try in the future.

btw, I really liked the Zu/VPI combo when I had it working for a few weeks. Sound was fantastic. It smoked a Clearaudio Concept at the same price point (with CA MC cart).
