I always say I don't care what it looks like, I care what it sounds like, but readily admit if the Wadax was the best sounding rig and was coming to my s system it would take quite a while before I became comfortable with the aesthetics.
It sounds quite good, but it is also distinctly… different than a regular cartridge.
I don't know how to describe it except it sounds more "digital" in some way - and by that I mean leading transients are a bit harsher but the background is also a bit quieter.
I can honestly see people...
I've found digital more than any other format seems to be listener-dependent.
For example, for several years the ESS ES9038PRO chip has been the holy grail of the audiophile community but I've never heard any product made with it sound good.
Why?
One of the best sounding DACs ever made.
Wadia was the first company that showed me digital could sound at all musical.
The only reason I went Rossini (with Rossini Clock) was I wanted something that could do more than 24/96.
Without the clock the Rossini still sounded worse than the...
Yes, I think it was $800 just a few years ago.
I congratulate you; I never found a dealer willing to part with theirs or charge me what I thought was a reasonable amount to order one from Wilson.
Since I didn't need it immediately, waiting about three weeks for my Lo-Pro to ship was no big deal.
Different components will work differently in different systems and for different people.
For example, back in the day every magazine was enraptured with Theta DACs, where I found them so detailed listener fatigue would set in within minutes.
Others disliked what was my reference DAC brand for...
Just to chime in, my Rossini Player Apex sounds better on the 6V setting going through my Ayre KX-R Twenty than it does at 2V; it seems to have more heft and low end and the Ayre has zero issues with the higher output level.
Also, the Apex is by far the best upgrade money I've spent, perhaps ever.
I readily admit I've always heard a certain synchronicity when using an amp and preamp from the same manufacturer; they've always sounded just a bit better when used together than when mixing and matching.
This makes sense when you consider they were likely designed together, but it also...
Many people are familiar with the cool Wilson Audio flat speaker jack that can be used to lift your speaker so that you can replace sliders with various feet - Wilson Diodes, IsoAcoustic or Stillpoints feet, etc.
Wilson Audio Flat Jack
It's included with Wilson Audio speakers, but Wilson...
Yes, but Fremer states at 2:18 in the video it's because he asked them what would happen if their tonearm bearing lost air pressure due to a power failure or pump failure.
I just stated I was surprised they hadn't considered that as they already included a warning to stop the platter ASAP...
Yes, I was surprised they didn't have a Graham Phantom Elite 12" or Kuzma Safir 9" mounted as well (with the same cartridge) so they could swap back and forth between the two; that's what I would have done.
I'm surprised at Framer's statement that they hadn't really considered what would happen when the tonearm lost the bearing air cushion due to a power or pump failure when they have explicit instructions on what to do in case of a power/pump failure to avoid scratching the glass plate that is...
I've seen a number of magazine reviews, but most of the usual websites are backordered/sold out.
Has anyone had a chance to try one of these yet? The reviews have been good, especially for the $6K price.
Sample review:
Tracking Angle: MoFi Electronics' MasterPhono™ Combines Versatility And...
Possibly personal preference as well.
I also have found there is always a certain synergy between preamps and amps from the same brand, and my amps are Ayre MX-R Twenties.
I found, like JA did in his Stereophile review, that the KX-R Twenty actually made sources sound better than when...
I know the last post here was years ago, but I wanted to mention I still use the KX-R Twenty and a pair of MX-R Twenties as my system, and would be happy to answer any questions anyone has about them.
I did compare a Boulder 1110 to my KX-R Twenty about three years ago, and it remained...
It still sounds absolutely wonderful.
That having been said, Fine Sounds dumped all parts following their acquisition and they can't handle anything over 24/96.
But I haven't found anything that sounds as good under mid-five figures new.
Took it to my dealer, they had two tables set up, one with an MC, one with an MM.
The MC sounded absolutely magnificent, as beautiful as I've heard the Ref 3 SE Phono sound.
Then we switched the same LP to the turntable with the MM cart and… instant "AM radio" sound lacking highs and lows with...
I'm not sure if I have a bum Ref 3 Phono SE or not; I normally use a MC cartridge but it's down at the moment while I am awaiting a new headshell.
This is a strange one - I can't imagine this is normal so I may have to take it to my dealer.
Basically I swapped to an inexpensive MM cart for a...
Actually, it's both.
Tapping on the table shouldn't be heard, but IMHO, neither should tapping on the plinth.
Both allow room vibrations to make it back into the cartridge and phono stage.
Many turntable manufacturers address the former, a surprising number do not address the latter.
One of...
It is, though.
Rapping on the plinth is a standard test of mine and virtually any turntable will do the same except for suspended turntables (spring suspension) or massive tables weighing over 100 lbs.
