I have not auditioned the VdH Stad in my system. I only tried the Colibri (XGP IIRC).
Back then, I couldn't get it to work properly in my setup. It was very sibilant and bright sounding. As well as being extremely finicky with tracking.
Good write up Mike, thanks!
Indeed getting the nut on top seems to be the way to go.
I also need to get me a set of tools to loosen and secure it while holding the screwdriver from the bottom.
IIRC, the Audio Technica AT33PTG has similar setup. But I don’t recall if the stylus guard could be...
I have also experienced build quality issues with VdH cartridges in the past. Specifically with the Colibri series (the original Colibri, not the new Stradivarius/Master/Grand Cru versions). Mr. VdH was very responsive and service was top notch, as the cartridges were replaced. However, after a...
I recall trying a Miyajima Premium BE mono cartridge with “stereo cut” mono reissues.
It did not sound good, and distorted on tracks that my stereo cartridge had no issues whatsoever.
Miyajima mono cartridges are true mono, meaning they have no vertical compliance, as opposed to modern...
Indeed it is an art, to match a cartridge to a phono amp.
The My Sonic Lab made SUT has only 1:26 ratio, which, in combination of the 53dB from the Pass low gain setting, may result in relatively ok gain.
But it does require a tryout and the end result is unknown to me. That’s why...
It seems some like them and some don’t, or just prefer the sound of a more complete phonostage.
I’ve recently purchased a My Sonic Labs Gold cartridge, following Shakti’s interesting journeys through analog.
Anyway, I’ve connected it to my XP-25, set the impedance to 500 (in the recommend...
Just received my copy a few days ago (after a month of so...).
The performance is magnificent!
Recorded sound is very good. The string section sounds amazing and very immediate. I can understand the complaints regarding lack of dynamics, the tympani are recorded a bit further back.
I second that. I was also eager to hear about Essence vs Antileon comparison.
Nevertheless, thanks for sharing your experience.
I’m also considering CH or Gryphon with my Wilson Benesch (currently using a Luxman M900u).
Getting hold of a mint original is not an easy task. Most s/h sellers rate according to vinyl cosmetics and not actual groove condition. They charge high prices and you eventually (I, at least) throw them out of my window with rage after hearing the distortion in the grooves.
As an example, I...
The Backhuas/Brahms recording is indeed magnificent.
I believe the Rostro/Richter set was reissued on Speakers Corner, which usually do justice with the analog masters.
I also ordered the Haitink/Bruckner, hopefully it won’t disappoint.
Well, the WB Resolution are fully broken in and sounding lovely with the Luxman m900.
I’ve visited a friend and heard a Wilson Audio + Lamm combo and it sounded so musical and “right”.
I was wondering if the Lamm M1.2 monos will be a good match with the WB, and if anyone compared them to the...
Thanks Bodhi! Good catch.
After listening (a few years ago) to its smaller brother, the ACT Evo (which was also discussed in this thread), I’ve felt it was lacking some bottom end weight and overall resolution (pun not intended). During my 2017 visit to the Munich High End show, I’ve fell for...
Adding to the list the Boulder 1161, the smaller brother of the 1160. Anyone know how they compare? Is the 1161 powerful enough?
And the Audia Flight Strumento no. 4 mk2. Any love for those? Are they in the detailed/neutral camp? They seem to be quite powerful (500W @ 4ohms, 900W @ 2ohms).
