Hiring an external professional to tweak/optimize our audio systems?

Stirling was here for two and a half days and the results exceeded my expectations. Day one was only half a day because of the simplicity of my system but--call it reverse expectation bias--I expected nothing from the housekeeping process but it yielded an improvement in clarity and focus. The...

On the "Trayle" to great sound

Stirling will be visiting me for a couple of days week after next. It's great to read reports like this--gives me hope he can work his magic with my challenging room and rather modest system.

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

Right, I meant when you were experimenting with the DAC settings. After listening for a while I can't replicate what you guys are doing without a preamp. I didn't think I could but I wanted to prove it to myself. The question for me now is do I want to throw a preamp into the mix. I can get the...

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

So you are using the preamp's volume control to compensate for higher and lower recording gain levels and adjusting the DAC once you have achieved equal volume?

    Pass Labs XP 22

The XP 22 I'm considering is a demo so it is broken in. The Boulder has a balanced input impedance rating of something like 200k so just about anything will drive it. I believe the Berkeley achieves its 1mA at a 54 volume setting hence that is the recommended setting for downstream volume...

    Pass Labs XP 22

In the digital audio forum I've been discussing my setup which has no preamp but runs a Berkeley Alpha DAC 2 directly into my Boulder 2060. There seems to be a consensus that a preamp adds something beyond functionality. Ack feels the Berkeley is not suited to drive an amp directly because of...

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

According to the Alpha DAC 2 specs on Berkeley"s website the volume control is in .1 dB increments.

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

I'd like to believe I have a fairly high resolution system--it sounds great to me-- and all my gear is stock and will almost certainly stay that way. As my sig shows I'm not running a preamp and that may well effect the sound although no one yet can give me any electrical reasons why that would...

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

I'm skeptical to say the least. I find it hard to believe someone can hear a difference with a 1/10 DB change. However once I get work out of the way today I'll give it a go. I'll use some familiar music and go for the highest volume setting I can get away with, probably 45 or a little higher...

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

Don't agree with ack on the SQ differences with volume settings on Berkeley DACs but I do agree with him on the Ref 1. Had one at home and really strained to hear a difference between it and the Alpha DAC 2. Also had a Ref 2 here briefly and there was an improvement over the Alpha 2--not huge...

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

My Berkeley is an Alpha DAC 2/MQA, not a reference series. Still, I stand by what I said in my earlier post. Let us know how your system sounds when you get the DAC.

Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Reference Series 2

I have to disagree. I'm running a Berkeley Alpha DAC 2/MQA > Boulder 2060 > Magico S3 MkII's at 35-45 normally on the Berkeley and the sound is anything but thin. As far as changing with volume settings, well the music gets louder when I increase the volume and softer when I lower it.

Dedicated audio room build thread aka The Big Dig

Forgot to mention the Magico room in on resilient channels and is essentially a suspended room inside of a concrete building. If you've looked at the pics you'll see a cloud/diffusion treatment on the ceiling, not much absorption. Alon Wolf told me the room is bass neutral down to 60 Hz. I think...

Dedicated audio room build thread aka The Big Dig

What a great project. Your room's finished dimensions will be almost identical to Magico's listening room. They used 5" of QuietRock all the way around since they were concerned about isolating the room from a factory full of machine tools. Plenty of absorption and diffusion too. The best...

    Magico M3

They are terrific speakers but with lots of measurements and position changes I've pretty well determined the room is causing she suckout. I bought a miniDSP and have a JL e112 on the way. I'll run the S3's full range and cross the sub over at 60 Hz. I'm pretty sure I can control the reverb with...

They were demos so I'm guessing a few hundred.

Is my amp under powered for my A3's?

The Hegel H360 worked very well with mine. But when I moved up to S3 MkII I got a Boulder 2060 and the difference was significant. I suspect it would not have been as great a difference with the A3s. The H360 is available at a reasonable cost second hand.

Visit to Alma Music and Audio

I can't say I disagree because I've only heard the Sonja 2.2 at a show and I haven't heard the S5's at all. I did listen to the M3's last week at Magico and in that very large room they had no trouble filling it with deep accurate bass. I told Peter Mackay later that it was the best recorded...

    $10,000 loudspeakers

There are a couple of pairs of Magico A3's on Audiogon which can be had for less than $10k. I would really think about that option.

    Magico M3

I have S3 MkII's, not S5's. I would have thought the bass would be pretty equal between the M3's and S3's. Does the S3 also have the same midrange driver?

    Magico M3

New to WBF and a new Magico owner. Just discovered this thread and we have some real similarities. My room is almost exactly the same size as yours and I too have a suckout exactly where you do. My first Magicos were A3's and I used a JL e112 sub strategically placed (with help from a visit by...

Qobuz vs. Tidal? Which one is better?

Been a Tidal subscriber for over a year, I'm in the U.S. Qobuz Beta and I'm squarely on the fence in the MQA/Hi Res debate. So far it seems to me Tidal is equal to Qobuz in classical and jazz coverage and way deeper in pop, indie, rap, etc. I'll probably subscribe to both for a month or two and...

Qobuz vs. Tidal? Which one is better?

I noticed the same thing using Qobuz with Roon. I emailed Qobuz and they replied they were aware of the problem and it had to do with licenses not yet being granted for anything above 16/44 on certain albums. Also, I've yet to find a high res album in my library on Qobuz that's not available on...

    $10,000 loudspeakers

In So Cal the A3's are available with fairly short lead time from two dealers I know. My dealer did discount a bit. I would imagine it will be a while before any come up on the second hand market.

    $10,000 loudspeakers

I'm using a Hegel H360 with a pair of Magico A3's. In my 14'6" x 19' x 10' room they are an outstanding combination. Best I've had. At $9800 the A3's fit the budget being discussed here too.

As We Get Older - Hearing Aids for High End Audio/Concerts & Home Theatre

Marshall Chassin (google him) recommended Oticon and Widex for the quality and performance of their DACs. He felt thry were ahead of the rest of the field.

As We Get Older - Hearing Aids for High End Audio/Concerts & Home Theatre

I demoed both the OPN 1 and 2, each for a couple of weeks including a visit with each to the audiologist for fine tuning. I couldn't tell the difference between them so I saved money with the 2.

As We Get Older - Hearing Aids for High End Audio/Concerts & Home Theatre

Do you mean the Oticon OPN? The OPN 1 actually has 10k FQ extension and the OPN 2 is 8K. I demoed both and settled on the OPN 2. Best HA I've had and I'm lucky to have an audiologist who understands our hobby. I also follow Marshall Chasin to keep up on HA developments relative to music.
