When You Only Want One: A Single Orchestral Test Disc

Tom, thanks for taking the time to review this recording. I agree with your final summary: “Yes, the recording is ‘impressive’ sounding, but it’s just unnaturally reverberant and ‘pulled apart’, even a bit ’swimmy,’ on a well set-up system, in my opinion.” My impressions are from playing the...

New Album & The Beginning of Basketball Season

The Laker/Pels trade reminds me of the 1989 Cowboys/Vikings trade when Dallas gave up Herschel Walker for rights to what seemed like half the Minnesota franchise. If Pels ownership/management is astute, this could really turn out well for them. In spite of what the pundits say, I doubt it will...

When You Only Want One: A Single Orchestral Test Disc

Tom, Eiji Oue's Minnesota Orchestra rendition of Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, 2001 HDCD recording on Reference Recordings label has received a lot of acclaim over what an orchestral recording done right should sound like. I suspect you've heard this one too. Thoughts?

    Magico M3

I asked because they need about 500 hours to stabilize, and the variability of the bass during this time is significant. This and getting them well away from the back wall pretty much solved my issues. To my ears (and a couple of audio buddies), terrific speakers for a moderate sized room.

They have limited US distribution, but you might also want to consider something from TIDAL.

    CD's/SACDs vs Server and Streamer

Mike, my question was directed to whoever would like to comment. I value both CD and SACD playback.... and simplicity. So my $20 - 25K baseline (others may differ) would be a good current line player, perhaps with an external clock.

    CD's/SACDs vs Server and Streamer

From my more limited means, the question would need to be answered within a spend of say $20-25K. Would that change the answer?

Flemming Rasmussen’s Personal Foreword to the New Gryphon Catalog

Quite a guy... and IMO an iconic company. Several years ago I posted on the Gryphon site regarding my interest in their products and lamenting their lack of US distribution. I was surprised to receive a personal response from Flemming. About a year later, when Philip became Gryphon's US...

Trapping noise with a/c cords but not at the expense of killing dynamics

I have a AQ Hurricane Source PC from my AQ Niagara 5000 conditioner to my Esoteric K-03X SACD/CD Player. (I bought this based on good experience with Hurricanes elsewhere in my system.) Immediately noticeable change to my ears were marked increase in clarity and dynamics over the stock cord...

Best bang for the buck used speakers under $50k ?

I have S3 Mk2s in a 15' x 18' x 8' room (if you count 2' shelving on one long side). Speakers are 52" out from the longer back wall. I play mostly classical and jazz. Bass and dynamics are excellent. I agree with Bodhi: larger models might well overdrive my room without lots of careful room...

    Magico M3

I have S3 Mk2s in a smallish room (approx 15 x 18 x 8 max), I have to say that driven by a Diablo 300, the bass quality/quantity and depth is really good. Very happy with the balance here. For me S5 Mk2s in this room would likely be too much. The M2s would probably be where I'd look for an...

Pass X350.8 or X260.8 is better for me?

I think it's likely that both of you would benefit from speaking with Pass Labs' Kent English on the Pass Support line. Kent is a straight shooter and IMO will give you an excellent perspective based on your system, music, and listening priorities.

Is my amp under powered for my A3's?

I echo Bodhi's advice. I have S3 Mk2s, which present a load similar to your A3s. I play mostly classical music where dynamics matter. Although I don't often listen at what most would consider 'loud' levels, I really appreciate the ease with which my Gryphon Diablo 300 (600 watts into 4 ohms)...

    MSB S500 stereo poweramp

As we used to say in the mainframe computer industry, 'Big Iron!' The S/N spec practically jumps off the page. Looks like these are likely to become aspirational products for some of us. Maybe offer some little brothers later (?).

    Audioquest Hurricane Power Cord

Hurricanes: How long to break in? Dealer advised 200 - 300 hours. I did not notice significant change on HCs wall to 5000 and 5000 to integrated.... perhaps because the whole upgrade made such a dramatic difference. I am breaking in a Hurricane Source now, 5000 to CDP. Here I have noticed a...
