There definitely is something to this, Ron. Look at Magico M series speakers, among many others. Cabinet shape is important.

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Bob, some people have long virtual system threads and share a lot of information about upgrades, progress, and the journey. Others don't even list their system details in their signature. Everybody is different. I don't think the expanding universe or the enlarging of one's ego has much to...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Well, nothing but online opinions and reviews for me; those of ddk, Tango, Rockitman, and others. And the desire to do an actual comparison with my V-12. The long 3012R thread on WBF was fairly influential too. During the interim while I searched for a good sample, I was also able to hear one...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Al, I didn't catch those qualifications in your earlier post. I thought you were too absolute and rather boldly telling others what they should and should not do. So it seems we both are putting a lot of stock into online opinions and reviews, at least for $2-3K purchases. And I still think...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Al, You know I form opinions about gear slowly and deliberately, and through direct listening. However, I think each of us should be free to choose for ourselves whether or not we should stop watching these "silly" videos, or putting too much stock into online opinions or reviews. I have also...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Those opposed to these videos don't want the rest of us to use them to form "absolute conclusions and judgements" about the sound of a particular system. The rest of us seem to be saying that we are not using them to form "absolute conclusions and judgements" about the sound of particular...

I won't comment on this video's sound quality for fear of the reprisals :), but I did take a look at this YouTube video's comment section. How can anyone argue based on those comments, that this is a bad thing for the industry? People seem engaged, learning from this video, and discussing...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Alex, perhaps I don't understand in what direction you think the hobby is heading. I thought it was heading in a direction of ever increasing prices, fewer brick and mortar stores, and an aging and declining demographic or customer base. All negatives, IMO. It would seem to me that the...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

I find it curious that those who like the videos understand their limitations and qualify their usefulness, while those who don't like the videos seem completely dismissive of them. Those advocating for the videos see them as complimentary, not exclusive, and generally have a libertarian or...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

I don't think this topic is as polemic as some are suggesting. These videos will not solve any problems. They will not accurately portray the sound of a system. They are not going to put dealers out of business. Some people simply have fun sharing them, and they may give some insight into a...

I think Al is referring to two people who listen to a lot of live unamplified music and then disagree on whether or not some particular reproduced music or system then sounds natural. Correct me if I'm wrong, Al.

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Ron, I have not once listened to a video I saw on YouTube or WBF back over my phone. Perhaps others do it this way, but I think most people listen through good quality headphones or at least their desk top computer speakers. iPhone speakers are terrible. Are all of your comments based on...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

I think there is just a difference of opinion about the efficacy of such videos. Personally, I like them. Do I think they are the last word in representing the way someone's system actually sounds, no. Can they compliment other information, like a written listening impression, I think so. I...

Low cost Natural sound systems from YouTube

Kedar, I'm only curious to hear how larger scale music comes across. I have no expectations, one way or the other. If it fails with that, I want to see if I can hear how it fails so as to better understand the compromises you are describing. For those of us who don't or can't get around the...

Low cost Natural sound systems from YouTube

That's an interesting idea. I agree that tone is paramount. I always thought of it as first being captured on the recording, then assembling a system that does as little as possible to corrupt it, and finally, setting the system up optimally in the room to make it come alive for the listener...

    Sme 3012 R

Fransisco, appreciate your many suggestions and interest in this project. I do not have the math ability to calculate accurately the different effect on each of the four towers if I were to clamp on the armboard and 3012R to the top chassis. Adding additional weights to counterbalance the...

    Sme 3012 R

Thanks, 108CY. That's the one I was remembering. I don't know about the phono cable accomodation. Did you ever compare the sound of that arm and the V-12 on that table? Of course, if SME had positioned the armboard so that both the vintage and contemporary arms could be mounted, that would...

    Sme 3012 R

Thanks Jeff. I followed that thread at the time. The Victor is round and provides much more flexibility for armpod placement. My Model 30/12 has that rectangular top chassis with an offset platter. The varying distances to the left side and the back side make for some complication, as does...

    Sme 3012 R

The cutout appears to be the same. I am aware of one SME Model 20/12 in London that was custom made by SME to allow the stock armboard to be shifted slightly on the top chassis to accommodate a 3012 arm. I do not know how they got around the RCA terminal connection. Perhaps that was also...

    Sme 3012 R

Fransisco, I agree with you. I fully realize that this is not an ideal installation and if the results are less than expected, it will certainly be criticized precisely for the issue that you raise. I discussed this in earlier posts. The issue is relative movement between the platter surface...

    Sme 3012 R

Not possible, Fransisco. A dealer wrote me that it may be possible to replace the rear arm tube stub with stock tubing and cut it shorter to make the arm fit, but that would mean the counterweight could not be moved by rotating the knob on the back of the arm, which is a nice feature. David...

    Sme 3012 R

It is not. I had thought it was a couple of years ago when I almost bought one, but someone pointed out on a different forum that their is not enough clearance from the right rear suspension tower. It is about 1/2" too long. Of course, that would have been the simple approach if it were possible.
  29. PeterA

    Sme 3012 R

The issue to me seems to be relative movement between the armbase and the platter surface made possible by the compliance of the suspension. It is not ideal, but I do not know how adversely it will affect performance until I try it. If it does not sound good, I will sell the arm or try a...
