Not sure why that is lazy? I would have thought it was a fair expectation. Do you eat at restaurants where you need to guess at the dish and ingredients or do you lazily go to those who actually describe it?

Absolutely spot on. It is ridiculous to think otherwise imho ymmv etc.

What is left for you to optimize Mike. Your vinyl has reached the end point...with a luxury to choose variation too. The way I see what you are doing is just out of curiosity.
just working through the DaVa cartridge and Primary Control FCL arm niggles. now need to get my MC Trio for the EMIA phono built so i can switch inputs again. at the moment stuck plugging and unplugging phono cables.:( so vinyl 'variation' becomes a buzz kill. which pushes me to digital (not a bad thing) when my head is not in the plugging mood. the quality of the digital takes the urgency away from the vinyl frustrations. sorting out these explorations has taken longer than i expected. not plug and play.....so out of my comfort zone.

last night a break through with the DaVa. listened to it for 4 hours. reminded me very positively of the Neumann at ddk's. so a nice turning of a corner. i see light now.

I have been transferring my analogue master tapes to high def. PCM and DSD. The two sounds quite distinct, at least on my DAC, and one can easily tell them apart. DSD sounds closer to the analogue tape.
If this is the case, I would very much like to know the particulars of your DAC and your system's components. Subsequently, since you've been making these transfers, I'd like to request sample transfers of two tracks from one of your tapes in both PCM and DSD. Please feel free to email me a link for the downloads.

My email address: dblumenstein@dagogo.com

Thanks

Honesty and audio who thinks it’s possible lol
aside of mofi not being possible upfront

I think they are doing all they can to make great sound
talk of chain of custody is good to read on there part

I have done some digital scans to try to determine sources for high Rez and dsd as well.
im not a pro but if we take the time to read up on this topic
the take away is simple
it ruins the feel or love of the music I loved a few mins before

does anyone who has a basic understanding of tape alone think there is a perfection ?
the thought of perfection is a debatable topic in itself

if this thread is purely a legal argument it’s above my pay grade , but even without the legal aspect this hurts all of us
from reviewers , to industry experts to us buyers

years ago I heard digital studder on a song
a song i own ten alt ways
it was clear to me most do the best they can to make great sound regardless of source

I was just comparing to the activity in sites where people collectively built great databases on recordings, such as sacd.net or later HRAudio.net.

You analogy is humorous but IMHO lacks sense an audio forum. We are supposed to be proactive in stereo matters, not average consumers! ;)

Go out and buy the original vinyl release, great music, especially during a divorce ! ;)
This paragraph is interesting:

“Most importantly, Dylan's voice sounds utterly natural and convincing, though if your set-up isn't up to the task, the sibilants may go all smeary on you. Don't blame the mastering. Properly decoded it should sound as clean on this vinyl as on the SACD.”

I do not see the (TM) after “natural”. I also have a hard time following whether he’s talking about the digital vinyl or the digital SACD. How does one “properly decode“ a vinyl record?

The review did not encourage me to go out and buy the recording in either format. And I don’t know what this review has to do with the subject of this thread. It doesn’t really go into the digital step process or describe how the digital vinyl sounds different from the digital SACD. He does imply that it sounds different from the other vinyl re-issues, but not necessarily better.

I may withdraw my comment that the review is informative.

To be honest, I would rather use my spare time listening to music than compiling lists. I don't choose my music based on the source or mastering process and I don't really care if it is digital or analog, but I do care if someone markets it as something it is not.

This episode focuses on this thread: the lawsuit against Mo-Fi, the TAS questions to Jim Davis, Michael Fremer on 90%, and the Impex digital transfer.

I have four MoFi recordings and have not listened to them in years. I don't see them on the list. Never really liked the way they sounded, for whatever reason.

1. MFSL 1-208 Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto
2. MFSL 1-201 Muddy Waters/Folk Singer
3. MFSL 1-284 Madeleine Peyroux/Careless Love
4. MFSL 1-337 Ray Charles/ the Genius Sings the Blues

i have only 1 One Step, the Abbraxas, plus 13 other MoFi 45's, 10 of which are listed with digital steps. my Aretha's Gold 45, Primus, and Richard Thompson 'Enchanted' are not specified. i'm a complete'ist 45rpm collector, buying almost every one. even the RR "meh" 45's....that are openly digi-sourced.

the 10 with the digisteps-----3 Dire Straits, 4 Dylan, Tigerlilly, Santana, and i Robot.

interesting that i cannot recall playing any of those in the last few years other than One Step Abbraxas and the Santana 45. although i recall feeling that the earlier 2007 MoFi of Santana (MSFL1-303) sounded better. i've used 'Jingo' as a demo track frequently for guests and prefer the earlier pressing for that.....makes more sense now.

i have not bought 33rpm MoFi's for years, so maybe i have zero of those with a digital step.....or maybe i have one somewhere. i own many early MoFi's, some of which are very good.

I do not see Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks on the list. Or any classical.

Are there any unique problem with the 1step process in itself?

The impex Patricia Barber 1step box has sonic problem - low, low soundstaging and forward imaging, and just flat, lethargic feeling.

There's also another 2 HK releases of 1step that sound underwhelming as well.

Just adding my two cents to this discussion. Was I disappointed there is a digital step involved? Yes. However, in mitigation, I turn to the 45 rpm MFSL2-466 "Dire Straits" double LP in my collection. Based on recent reporting, this item has a digital step. To me, even with that black mark, lol, it is still one of the best sounding LPs that I have. I use it for demonstrating, to guests, how amazing properly made vinyl can sound. As long as the final product provides good listening, the digital step does not concern me that much.

The problem is - was this pressing derived from the digital "master" kept at Warner USA or was it derived from the digital master kept at Mercury(Universal)?

For years, it has always been noted that US pressings of this recording has never sound as good as those from the UK.

Both the US and UK pressings have their unique own sonic signatures...

I am way out of the loop to hazard a guess on which digital master was used. My copy was purchased in December 2019 from Acoustic Sounds. The album jacket has a Special Edition No. 006646. If someone can discern which master was used from that information, more power to them , lol.

I have been transferring my analogue master tapes to high def. PCM and DSD. The two sounds quite distinct, at least on my DAC, and one can easily tell them apart. DSD sounds closer to the analogue tape.
I do the same thing... but you would be hard pressed to hear a difference... I'm using the Merging Horus
