On the last dunk by Aaron Gordon he jumped over 7’5” Tacko Fall but not enough to win the slam dunk. Win by Derrick Jones of the Heat.

Both were so good that it should have been a tie

Kia NBA All-Star Game MVP Award named for Kobe Bryant

Official release

CHICAGO – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced today that the Kia NBA All-Star Game MVP Award has been permanently named for the late Kobe Bryant, an 18-time All-Star who won a record-tying four All-Star Game MVP awards.

The Kia NBA All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the conclusion of the 2020 NBA All-Star Game in Chicago, where the league is celebrating the lives of Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven other people who tragically passed away in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26.

“Kobe Bryant is synonymous with NBA All-Star and embodies the spirit of this global celebration of our game,” said Silver. “He always relished the opportunity to compete with the best of the best and perform at the highest level for millions of fans around the world.”

Bryant made his NBA All-Star Game debut in 1998 at age 19 – the youngest player to ever play in an All-Star Game. That appearance marked the first of his 18 All-Star selections, second most in NBA history behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (19). Bryant holds the NBA record for consecutive All-Star selections as he was honored 18 straight times from 1998-2016.

Bryant was named the NBA All-Star Game MVP in 2002, 2007, 2009 (co-winner with Shaquille O’Neal) and 2011. The only other player to win four NBA All-Star Game MVP awards is Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Bob Pettit.

A five-time NBA champion, Bryant played his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He earned the 2007-08 Kia NBA MVP Award, two Bill Russell Finals MVP awards and 15 All-NBA Team selections. Bryant ranks fourth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with 33,643 points.

The winner of the 2020 Kia NBA All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award will be determined by NBA fans (who account for 25% of the vote) and a media panel (75% of the vote). This is the 10thstraight year that Kia will serve as the title partner of the NBA All-Star Game MVP Award.

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announces 8 finalists for Class of 2020 Election
Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett among finalists

Official release

CHICAGO -- The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today, at NBA All-Star Weekend, four extraordinary players and four exceptional coaches, as finalists from the North American and Women’s committees to be considered for election in 2020.

This year’s list includes four first-time finalists: 18-time NBA All-Star and five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant, 15-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA Finals MVP Tim Duncan, 15-time NBA All-Star and nine-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection Kevin Garnett, and 10-time WNBA All-Star and four-time Olympic gold medalist Tamika Catchings.

Previous finalists included again this year for consideration are three-time NCAA National Championship Coach of Baylor Kim Mulkey, five-time Division II National Coach of the Year Barbara Stevens, four-time National Coach of the Year Eddie Sutton and two-time NBA Champion coach Rudy Tomjanovich.

“When the nominees for the Class of 2020 were announced in December, we knew this class had the potential of being one of the most historic of all time,” said Jerry Colangelo, Chairman of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. “The untimely passing of Kobe Bryant has left us in a state of reflective mourning and we’re proud to honor his legacy while also recognizing seven other individuals who have meant so much to our game. We congratulate our finalists and those who have supported them on their journeys, and we look forward to revealing the Class of 2020 at the Final Four in Atlanta.”

The suspension will affect the Men’s and Women’s Veterans Committees, the Early African American Pioneer Committee, and the Contributor Committee. It is expected these categories will return for consideration for 2021. The goal of this suspension is to provide each enshrinee with the recognition and notoriety he or she deserves upon election.

The three finalists from the Women’s Screening Committee include: player Tamika Catchings; and coaches Kim Mulkey and Barbara Stevens.

So when all is said and done only 2 points separated the East and West yesterday in a shootout and Kawhi walks away with the MVP.....

Kawhi Leonard named Kia Kobe Bryant All-Star Game MVP
Clippers star scores 30 points, nails 8 3-pointers in Team LeBron's victory

Andrew Seligman | The Associated Press
Feb 17, 2020 6:57 AM ET

CHICAGO (AP) — Kawhi Leonard made it look effortless, nailing one 3-pointer after another and nearly matching an All-Star Game record.

The tough part came afterward. Finding the right words to express how he felt after becoming the first Kobe Bryant MVP award winner wasn’t so easy.

Leonard scored 30 points and hit eight 3-pointers to lead Team LeBron to a 157-155 victory over Team Giannis on Sunday night.

He was presented the MVP trophy that the league renamed after Bryant on Saturday, three weeks after the Lakers great and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were among the nine people killed when their helicopter crashed near Los Angeles.

“It’s very special,” Leonard said. “Like I said, I had a relationship with him. Words can’t explain how happy I am for it. Able to put that trophy in my room, in my trophy room, and just be able to see Kobe’s name on there, it just means a lot to me. He’s a big inspiration in my life. He did a lot for me.”

Bryant had a huge presence over the first All-Star festivities in Chicago since 1988, when Michael Jordan delighted the home crowd by beating Dominique Wilkins in a classic slam dunk contest and scoring 40 points to take MVP honors in the game.

There were all sorts of tributes to Bryant, his daughter and late NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern. But once the game started, it didn’t take long for Leonard to make his presence felt.

The Los Angeles Clippers star has two NBA finals MVP trophies after helping San Antonio and Toronto win championships.

He was picked for his fourth All-Star team and put on quite a display from the perimeter, knocking down 8 of 14 3-pointers.

Had he made one more, he would have matched Paul George’s All-Star record set in 2016. And he appeared to be well on his way to breaking it after a scorching start.

Leonard hit one just seconds into the game. He made all four 3s in the first quarter — the only shots he took while scoring 12 points.

Leonard was 7 of 10 in the first half, only to cool off a bit after that. He missed a step-back 3 that could have won it with his team up 154-153, but was the runaway winner for the game’s MVP honors with seven votes. LeBron James got three and Chicago product Anthony Davis and Chris Paul received one apiece.

All that’s missing for Leonard now is the league’s regular season MVP award.

“My mindset is always just to try to make my team the best team at the end of the regular season,” Leonard said. “And if I’m fortunate enough to win a regular season MVP, then I’ll be happy with it. I always just want to win championships. I’m not really concerned with the personal goal. So I always want to play to win championships.”

Leonard could have signed with the Lakers and teamed with LeBron James and Anthony Davis with Frank Vogel coaching them after leading Toronto to the championship last season. Instead, it was a one-night-only affair, with Vogel on the sideline for Team LeBron.

The Clippers are third in the Western Conference behind the Lakers and Denver, five games off the lead. They could cross paths in the playoffs with the team that shares their arena. But for one night, anyway, Leonard enjoyed being on the same side.

“It was fun,” he said. “I played with ’Bron and A.D. last year, and I think the year before that or so. But it’s always fun just to get around guys that are very competitive, see what they do on an everyday basis.

“Just talking, just being their teammate. We go at each other all year round. And just like I said, it’s great to be able to pick their brain and just be around them and joke and laugh.”

Kawhi - save it for Clipper games!

Great advice. He looks like Zeus there, among the mortals. :D But a Zeus who needs LM in the regular season, All-Star game is to show that Uncle Dennis packaged a right deal to the 'best' bidder. :)

I do think the Clippers now have a better front office than the Lakers now.

Jerry West is there, Lawrence Frank, Michael Winger and more.

Ballmer built a first class basketball organization.

But....the team still has to win ball games we'll see how it all turns out.

I completely agree. The Clippers are playing for the pie in the sky whereas the Lakers are playing at full throttle every game to win every game. But those old bones and muscles do need rest from time to time and the fact that Lakers are in 1st now means nothing other than the fact that if the Lakers and Clipps both win their quarter final series, then it would be Clipps vs Lakers in the semifinals and it is here that the Lakers season comes to an end. However if they do get out of the West then they have to face either the Bucks, Celts or Raptors, all of whom have easily beaten the Lakers

Having said all of that to me the greatest way this season could end is indeed with a Lakers win that would be dedicated to the memory of Kobe and his daughter and the 7 others who perished in that crash. This clearly could juice the Lakers to pull it off

SHOULD THE LAKERS LOAD MANAGE LEBRON FOR REMAINDER OF SEASON?

Doris Burke says the Lakers have to careful with LeBron James in the second half, especially with the playoffs on the horizon. Finally the Lakers might see the benefits of load management

Nets guard Kyrie Irving out for season, will undergo shoulder surgery

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and miss the rest of the season.

The Nets made the announcement Thursday before playing the Philadelphia 76ers in their first game after the All-Star break.

Coach Kenny Atkinson said earlier this week that the point guard was still having trouble with the shoulder that sidelined him for 26 games this season and wouldn’t play Thursday.
Irving said pain in the shoulder initially worsened after a game on Nov. 4. The Nets then went on a five-game road trip, where Irving continued to play until the pain got so bad he was having trouble lifting his shoulder.

He got a cortisone shot on Dec. 24 and was able to return on Jan. 12, but he acknowledged that surgery might still be necessary. By deciding to have surgery now, Irving’s first season in Brooklyn ends after just 20 games.

Irving missed the last five games before the break with a sprained right knee. He now joins Kevin Durant on the sideline; the superstars signed with the Nets together in July. Durant has been out all season while recovering from surgery to repair his Achilles' tendon.

Irving, who signed a 4-year, $141 million contract with the Nets last summer, is averaging 27.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists.

Brooklyn is still in good position to make the playoffs, coming out of the break in seventh place in the Eastern Conference and five games ahead of ninth-place Washington.

Golden State Warriors rule out Klay Thompson's return this season

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Golden State Warriors have officially ruled out Klay Thompson for the season as he continues to rehab a torn left ACL suffered in June.

"This is what I expected from the beginning given the severity of the injury," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said before Thursday night's game against the Houston Rockets. "And the normal timetable [for recovery], and so here we are. It's no surprise."

Thompson initially suffered the injury on June 13, 2019, during Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors. He had surgery July 2.

The Warriors' announcement doesn't come as a surprise; Kerr had hinted at this outcome since the beginning of the training camp. Kerr noted that the Warriors medical staff ultimately made the final call and that Thompson remains on track to be ready for the start of the 2020-21 season.

Kerr also said the possibility of Thompson playing for Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics hasn't been ruled out yet.

"It's not off the table," the coach said. "It's still a possibility. We haven't really discussed it. I think the [Olympic] team meets in July, so it's still quite a ways away. But it's really not anything we're discussing at this point. It's still a possibility ... obviously his health is the No. 1 concern, and so we'll kind of cross that bridge when we come to it."

Thompson, who helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 2016 Rio OIympics, has been open about wanting to represent the Americans again, especially with Kerr now an assistant on Gregg Popovich's staff. But that decision won't come for another several months as the Warriors keep a close eye on Thompson's recovery.

In the meantime, Kerr is happy to see the All-Star swingman's progress and him shooting around with his younger teammates on the practice floor in recent weeks.

"Klay was expecting this," Kerr said. "It's been a very frustrating year for Klay, but I think he's almost out of the woods. He's a couple months away from this season ending and moving towards a summer of preparing for the next season with his teammates. I think that's a much better place for him to be emotionally.

"I've really felt bad for him -- Klay loves to play basketball so much. He loves this game, and it means so much to him. In some ways he's kind of been lost without it. He's been so anxious to be out there on the floor helping his teammates. He's sees all these young guys, he sees our struggles, he wants to be out there, but it's been a long haul."

Bet Celtics fans are glad they are done dealing with Kyrie Irving.

What a head case that guy is.....and injured on top of that.

Clippers did have an advantage with Reggie Jackson - they originally drafted him in 2013.

Whoops....just realized I was wrong about this. I was thinking of Reggie Bullock. Bullock was drafted by LAC, played for the Pistons but is with the Knicks now.
