I would never have picked Spain to win it all. I was betting Argentina

Good on Marc Gasol

Ricky Rubio, Marc Gasol lead Spain past Argentina to win gold at FIBA World Cup
Spain finishes the tournament with an undefeated 8-0 record

Hats off to Marc Gasol, he won 2 big titles in a span of 3 months. And one of the few brothers in the NBA to have won a title.

This I like to read......

Curry commits to Olympics: 'That is the plan'

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is committed to playing for Team USA in next summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

"That is the plan, for sure," Curry said in an interview with ESPN's Rachel Nichols. "You know, obviously knock on wood, you don't want any injuries or things like that to interfere."

This would mark Curry's first appearance in the Olympics, an experience he said he's looking forward to, when asked specifically by Nichols whether he was committing to the team.

"Definitely wanna go," Curry said. "I've never been on the Olympic team. I've been on two World Cup championship gold-medal teams. But the Olympics is the experience that I want. And next year will hopefully be it."

Team USA recently finished seventh in the FIBA World Cup, the country's worst finish ever. The roster was composed mostly of players put together at the last minute, after multiple high-profile players backed out of playing. The embarrassing finish for the proud basketball country prompted Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo to say that he would "remember" players who "didn't show up." Curry's declaration figures to be the first signal that other American superstars will join the former MVP in trying to win a fourth straight Olympic gold medal for Team USA.

Curry says he is confident that the Americans can still reign supreme when they put their best players on the floor.

"We're still the best," Curry said. "If we get the guys that are supposed to be there, in terms of, you know, representing us in the Olympic stage and the commitment's been there, and I think it'll be there next year."

Curry would join Warriors head coach Steve Kerr on Team USA. Kerr is an assistant on Gregg Popovich's Team USA staff.

Curry also is sorting through his new reality as a member of a Warriors squad that comes into the season after a massive roster reconstruction that started when Kevin Durant signed with the Brooklyn Nets at the beginning of the free-agency period.

"At the end of the day, we live in an age where choice at the forefront, and K, you know, made a decision for himself and you can't argue that," Curry said. "I wish we could still play with K. He's an unbelievable talent, unbelievable person. We accomplished a lot together. But -- you know, things have changed a little bit. So you obviously wish him the best, obviously with his recovery first and foremost and things on and off the court. But we're gonna have to battle down the road. So this should be a fun, new experience on that front, too."

Curry acknowledged that he found out about Durant's decision to sign with the Nets as he flew to New York to check in on his now former teammate.

"There was never an expectation that I was going there to pitch him or to try to sell the Warriors and his future here," Curry said. "Everything was pretty much on the table. And again -- I think Draymond [Green] said it, too, he's like, 'He ain't need to call anybody to say, you know, 'This is' -- if he wanted to we woulda said, 'That's fine.' But he didn't have to call anybody to say, 'This is what I wanna do for myself.' And so you respect that."

One of the things that Durant discussed at times last season and reiterated in a story in the Wall Street Journal recently was the feeling that he was never fully embraced as a member of the Warriors because he did not get drafted and grow in the group's system like Curry and fellow All-Stars Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.

When asked about Durant's quote to the Journal that "nobody could get a full acceptance of me there," Curry held to the belief that Durant had to make the best decision for himself and the Warriors would always cherish the two championships the group won together with Durant during his three-year stint with the team.

"I mean, that's tough," Curry said. "There's so many narratives that go on, especially when you're at the top of the league. No matter how, you know, the full transition happens to Brooklyn, him separating himself from the Warriors -- that's gonna happen. I think he knows, you know, what we were about as teammates, what we were about as friends on and off the court. And again, nobody is gonna take away the accomplishments we had. But at the end of the day, whatever he, you know, needed to do to make that decision and however he wants to explain that -- that's just what's gonna happen."

Curry struck a similar chord when Nichols asked about Durant's quote to the Journal regarding the Warriors' offense and Kerr's offensive system -- with Durant saying in part, "The motion offense we run in Golden State, it only works to a certain point."

"Well, I don't care what plays we ran," Curry said. "We won two championships. And at the end of the day, we had a lotta talent and there was an expectation of us figuring out how to balance all that. And we talked a lot about it throughout the three-year run. It wasn't always perfect, but I think in terms of, you know, the results and what we were able to do on the floor, that kinda speaks for itself. We all wanna play iso-ball at the end of the day in some way, shape or form. But I'd rather have some championships, too."

Curry knows the Warriors will face a different challenge this year as they try to integrate D'Angelo Russell, who was acquired in a sign and trade with the Nets for Durant, into the offense while the group waits for Thompson to return from an ACL injury. It remains to be seen how the Warriors will divvy up Curry's minutes in the new year, but Curry demurred when the topic of load management came up.

"I wanna be smart about what I'm doing," Curry said. "I doubt there'll be any games where I'm playing 48 minutes (laugh) and -- just 'cause I -- I could, but why, you know, that's not -- that's not part of, you know, how you achieve greatness, at the end of the day, for what we're trying to accomplish, which is a championship. So everything's gonna be in light of trying to get another banner. All the other stuff is -- it'll take care of itself."

While winning another title remains Curry's ultimate goal, he acknowledged that winning his third MVP award would be a "special" accomplishment.

"I always say, I'm playing like I'm the best player on the floor no matter what the situation is," Curry said. "That's my mentality. It might not mean I'm taking every shot, but that's the aggressiveness that I need to play with and the confidence I need to have. So -- that'll carry me the rest of my career. And at the end of the day, winning an MVP would be special. And it's something that -- I've experienced before and would love to experience again. I'd love to push the envelope and push the limits a little bit. So ... you won't see anything different about how I play, you know, this season versus years past."

and this has to be for me the top story of the day.....if this comes about it puts the Warriors immediately back in the mix

NBA rumors: Warriors 'looming threat' for Giannis Antetokounmpo in free agency

The retired Shaun Livingston was the last Warrior to wear No. 34. Will the next one be NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo?

While it sounds wild and surely would set NBA Twitter ablaze once again, crazier things have happened. The Warriors always will be a threat to sign a star, and the Greek Freak is no exception.

"The one team lurking out there -- I don't know how this would happen -- but the Warriors have always been the big threat to go after Giannis," ESPN's Ramona Shelbourne said Monday on "The Jump."

The Bucks superstar shares the same agency as Warriors star Steph Curry and has the same agent as Steph's brother Seth. He is friends with the Curry family, and the New York Times' Marc Stein reported in February that the Warriors have "internally mused about a run at Giannis."

"It would be a difficult construction to make happen, but that is the one looming threat," Shelbourne said. "It comes down to what kind of guy is Giannis. What does he want his legacy to be? Is he the kind of guy who stays with one team his entire career and tries to bring a championship to Milwaukee or does he pull a Kevin Durant and go join a group of super friends?"

Antetokounmpo becomes a free agent after the 2020-21 season. Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green all will be on the books at that time with contracts that total at least $100 million.

The 24-year-old Antetokounmpo took home the league's highest honor last season when he posted 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. He already is a three-time All-NBA selection, three-time All-Star and twice has been voted to the All-Defensive team.

With a brand new arena and a hunger for more championships, the Warriors' front office will do anything they can to bring Giannis to the Bay Area. The summer of 2021 could be a big one in San Francisco.

And along comes the Bucks reply

Bucks reportedly not concerned about Warriors pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo

There have already been rumors that Giannis Antetokounmpo could be courted by the Golden State Warriors when he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2021.

That would be a serious coup for the Warriors, who already have a great core and who already signed Kevin Durant in a similar fashion a few years ago. That move put the rest of the NBA in a holding pattern until Durant finally left for the Brooklyn Nets this summer.

Now with the league ready to get back to normal, the idea that Antetokounmpo could sign with Golden State and its cadre of superstars is extremely unsettling.

But according to a new rumor, the Milwaukee Bucks are not afraid of Giannis leaving for San Francisco.

In a story posted to Heavy.com by former longtime Sporting News NBA writer Sean Deveney, a source inside the Bucks says they aren’t looking forward to the Warriors potentially swiping their MVP.

Via Heavy.com:

“Keeping Giannis, it’s a focus obviously,” one Bucks front-office source told Heavy.com. “But fighting the Warriors is not a focus. The Warriors are not the concern in the least. They’d have a long way to go to get him to Golden State, they’d have to give away a lot. He has never given any indication that he wants to leave Milwaukee. So a lot of that stuff, it is more chatter than anything.”

It would be a tale for the ages if the Warriors could somehow pull off the same thing with Antetokounmpo as they did with Durant in 2016. Of course, literally nobody but Warriors fans would be rooting for that to happen. It also seems unlikely that Antetokounmpo would want to leave Milwaukee to be in the shoes Durant found himself in — as the outsider on a team that would never be his.

It’s too far in the future to think about Giannis leaving Wisconsin, even moreso given that the Bucks have said that they are expecting to offer Antetokounmpo a max deal in the future, making all of this a moot point. But rumors like this are what makes the NBA go ‘round, and so here we are. I wouldn’t bet on Antetokounmpo leaving.

Thankfully commissioner Silver had the brass cajones to instiute stiffer penalties. My guess is most teams will pay the penalty to get what they want by tampering as usual.

Interesting that mention only of Harden's step back jumper but not of Giannis or LeBron when it comes to traveling

NBA teams approve stiffer penalties for tampering
By Tim Reynolds | The Associated Press

The NBA’s board of governors was unanimous Friday in its approval of a plan to stiffen potential penalties for tampering with players and employees under contract with other clubs, hoping for increased compliance in existing league rules.

Fines of up to $10 million are now possible in the most egregious situations, along with forfeiture of draft picks, suspensions of executives and voiding of contracts when rule breaking is found — significant enough threats, the league hopes, to end any notion of teams entering into deals with free agents before rules allow.

“We need to ensure that we’re creating a culture of compliance in this league,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said after two days of meetings concluded in New York. “Our teams want to know that they’re competing on a level playing field and frankly don’t want to feel disadvantaged if they are adhering to our existing rules.”

The rules aren’t new, but Silver has been saying for months that it’s pointless for the league to have policies that cannot be enforced. And while the new parameters aren’t foolproof, an important change is that every franchise will have to annually certify that its executives did not to free agents or their representatives before league rules allow.

But for years, the notion of waiting for the start of free agency to talk to available players has been largely ignored. This year, free agency was to officially begin at 6 p.m. Eastern on June 30, and many deals were known to be done within minutes.

“There need to be consequences when rules are violated,” Silver said.

The league told teams last week that fines would be raised in part to reflect the 600% increase in league revenue and the 1,100% increase in franchise value since the maximum-fine ceilings were last touched in 1996.

There are some elements of the new measures that still need to be worked out — specifically, the specifics behind the league’s new mandate that five teams will be randomly selected for investigatory audits to see if there were any rule-compliance issues. The NBA wants teams to keep records of talks with players and agents for a year, and the league has the power to review a team’s electronic communications devices.

The privacy concerns, however, remain a sticking point, Silver said.

“None of us want people looking into their personal communications,” Silver said. “But I think people who operate in a public company environment or operate in a financial world who are used to compliance procedures understand that you have to find a balance between disclosure and privacy so you can ensure that people will understand that there will be consequences for inappropriate behavior.”

In other matters before the Board of Governors:

Traveling
The issue of James Harden’s stepback jumper — travel or not a travel? — may soon have some clarity.

The NBA is revising rule-book language regarding traveling, and specifically defining a “gather” — plus clarifying how many steps a player may take.

For players receiving a pass or picking up a loose ball, the gather is defined as when control of the ball is gained. Off the dribble, the definition is when a player has two hands on the ball, or brings it to a pause, or otherwise gains control.

The league is expected to release a training video next week, and said correctly calling travels gather will be a point of emphasis this season.

Starters
Daily fantasy players and bettors will now know who is expected to play in a certain game a bit earlier than usual.

Teams now must submit starting lineups 30 minutes before the scheduled start time, instead of the previous rule of 10 minutes.

Lineups can still change after the 30-minute mark, which gives teams flexibility if an injury occurs or is aggravated during warm-ups.

Free Agency
Silver said there have been discussions about changing the dates of free agency, though noted that any change would have to be collectively bargained with the players. The Houston Rockets suggested last season that it would be a good idea to move free agency ahead of the NBA draft. “My sense is those conversations will continue,” Silver said of the notion of changing the free-agency calendar. “I don’t have any expectation that anything is going to happen in the near term.”

Hopefully they will finally enforce traveling violations

NBA Board of Governors approves clarification of rule governing traveling violations
BOG also institutes new deadline for submission of starting lineups
Official release

NEW YORK -- The NBA Board of Governors today approved new language in the NBA rule book that governs traveling violations. The revision will not change the substance of the rule but will help eliminate the gap between the rule as written and how it has been applied in NBA games.

“One of the most misunderstood rules in our game is how traveling is interpreted and appropriately called,” said Byron Spruell, NBA President, League Operations. “Revising the language of certain areas of the rule is part of our three-pronged approach to address the uncertainty around traveling. This approach also includes an enforcement plan to make traveling a point of emphasis for our officiating staff, along with an aggressive education plan to increase understanding of the rule by players, coaches, media and fans.”

The official NBA rule book will now have a section that formally defines the “gather,” which is a concept that has been used by the officiating staff for many years to apply the rule but was never defined in the rule book. The text of the rule will also be revised to provide additional clarity regarding how many steps a player may take after the gather occurs.

Click here for the new language in the rule book regarding traveling that is consistent with how the play has been called. A training video that further explains the traveling rule will be issued next week.

Also today, the NBA Board of Governors approved a change to the rule related to the submission of starting lineups. To increase transparency for teams, media and fans, the league will now require teams to submit their starting lineups 30 minutes prior to the game’s scheduled start time instead of the previous rule of 10 minutes. Teams will retain the ability to amend their starting lineups prior to the beginning of the game if circumstances change. This type of change is most likely to occur if a player sustains or reaggravates an injury during pregame warm-ups.

The NBA’s Competition Committee unanimously recommended the clarification of the rule governing traveling violations and the new deadline for the submission of starting lineups.

Vince Carter is like the Duracell bunny. He keeps on going.......

Atlanta Hawks re-sign Vince Carter
Eight-time All-Star set for NBA-record 22nd season
Official release

The Atlanta Hawks have re-signed guard/forward Vince Carter. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Carter appeared in 76 games (nine starts) last season for the Hawks, averaging 7.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 17.5 minutes (.419 FG%, .389 3FG%, .712 FT%). He’s also seen action in 88 postseason games (66 starts), averaging 18.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 34.5 minutes (.416 FG%, .338 3FG%, .796 FT%).

When Carter appears in his first regular season game in 2019-20, he will become the first player in NBA history to play in 22 seasons, and when he plays a game in 2020, will be the first player in league history to play in a game in four decades.

Carter currently ranks fifth all-time in games played with 1,481. He's 20th in field goals made (9,186), 18th in minutes (45,491), sixth in 3-pointers (2,229) and 20th in points (25,430).

He won the NBA’s Slam Dunk contest in 2000, and took home an Olympic gold medal that same year as part of the U.S. Men’s Basketball team in Sydney, Australia. He won the NBA’s Twyman-Stokes Award in 2015-16, recognizing the league’s ideal teammate who exemplifies selfless play and commitment and dedication to the team.

Carter spent three college seasons at North Carolina, where he helped lead the Tar Heels to back-to-back Final Four appearances (1997, 1998), and was a consensus Second-Team All-American as a junior, posting 15.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 38 games (.591 FG%, .411 3FG%, .680 FT%).

No wonder that the big teams are up for higher fines.
Firstly they already got what they wanted and secondly they are better protected against tampering from other teams in the future
