Has being an audiophile changed the way you view the quality of other things?

I remember the book "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance", which espoused the philosophy that to learn about life you need to fully master one thing. My obsession with audio has taught how you can see all the human behavioural traits and belief systems as expressed by audiophiles.

    Modding my ARC Ref Anniversary

Another option to replacing the heatsink, is to just put a copper plate between the device and the heatsink, so that the regulator is contacting with copper and not aluminum. Then use a brass screw. The reasoning behind this is the removal of eddie current in the heatsink.

    Modding my ARC Ref Anniversary

Hi Ayreman, These: I don't know of any direct commercial available replacement in copper. I make my own from copper sheet squares like these . You don't need that much metal to act as a heatsink, so I use 3 plates, the middle one flat and the outer ones bent out to the sides for airflow...

    Modding my ARC Ref Anniversary

Wow Ayreman, you don't hold back! I agree with you that you can only get to the best by starting with a really good circuit and then carefully selecting the best components. Your pre could never be sold commercially, because of the 20x markup ratio on top of those insane parts. By the way, I...

Solid state amp to drive field coil woofers? Thoughts?

LOL, it's surprising to hear a tube guy say that there is no benefit! I will definitely try a bigger gauge - I have been running 18awg. Sounds good. What voltage range will it have, and how much current?

Solid state amp to drive field coil woofers? Thoughts?

Am I understanding you correctly that the Tungar PS is unregulated, or that once you regulate it, the fact that it is Tungar makes no difference? Your comments on the cables are interesting. What king of gauge do you think is necessary? I am interested to know more about your power supply design.

    ATC VS WILSON SASHA

Hi Larry, I only have experience of the 100 and the 50 and 20, both passive and active. These were available to the pro and consumer markets. The pro version had a different finish with a rounded baffle and no grill. If memory serves me right, the pro price was cheaper . I personally preferred...

    ATC VS WILSON SASHA

I used to work with ATC monitors 20 years ago. I always thought that they were the best (most neutral/natural) sounding of all the pro monitors I heard. The differences between the pro and consumer ATCs were always cosmetic - doubt that has changed.

Solid state amp to drive field coil woofers? Thoughts?

Gorgeous speakers! Your bass drivers are essentially the same as mine, although you have 2 per side and running ported so you have way more efficiency! I would humbly suggest that you experiment with the power supplies for the drivers. On my bass driver I started with a 20V 5A rated unit (the...

Sorry, who are you referring to? The OP?

Solid state amp to drive field coil woofers? Thoughts?

lovely Ralph, are yours the Hartsfields or the T series? What are you using to power the motors? No argument from me on everything you have said! I always felt that ferrite magnet speakers sounded somewhat grey and dead compared to alnico. field coils seam to sound even more alive, and I am...

Solid state amp to drive field coil woofers? Thoughts?

I am curious, what are your field coils, and how do you find them compared to other approaches. Thanks David

    Home made field coil speakers.

I think the K145 might go a bit lower, but not by much. As I am running mine sealed, I really sacrifice some efficiency to get bass down to 35hz. Don't really want to run subs, as I feel the down sides outweigh the benefits. 26hz sounds fine to me, especially if you are getting efficiency and...

    Home made field coil speakers.

I would love to hear those Hartsfields! it is the emotional side that drives my choice. I selected the t35 tweeter because I could not stop listening to it. The matching Seas midwoofer left me cold. The Supravox again had me hooked. I am not a fan of most hi end audio, which tends to focus on...

    Home made field coil speakers.

Wolf Von Langa did some 604 field coils. There was a pair on ebay about 5 years ago for a pittance. I was tempted to buy them. The Rullits with the whizzer obviously go a lot higher up than the Supravoxs, which I need to cross over at 6K. This is actually a lot easier than the bass, which is...
