SFCM Acquires PENTATONE Record Label

What does this mean for the label and the music it chooses to record? How tied will it be to the SFCM and its related pool of talent? Will PENTATONE lose its autonomy?

Is this a trend? A worrying one?

From the piece linked:

Pentatone will continue to operate as an independent company, but will now have the advantage of using SFCM’s state-of-the-art recording studio in the Ute and William K. Bowes Jr. Center for Performing Arts, giving it a foothold on the West Coast. Aside from giving students a firsthand look at how a world-class record label operates—with all of the attendant opportunities for internships and other collaborations—Pentatone’s pool of engineers and musical talent add to SFCM’s deep roster of educational resources.

Let's hope that it does remain independent.

Let’s indeed hope Pentatone keeps on making high quality recordings of classical music. Own quite a lot of their (dsd 64) recordings and some of them are mighty fine.

We're fairly familiar with the SFCM. My wife took lessons there as an adult and performed the Beethoven 3rd piano concerto in their old concert hall before they moved to a beautiful building setting much nearer downtown SF. We've attended some recitals in their new building and the concert hall is magnificent. We also know several of their graduates and several of their faculty. The SFCM is a non-profit, and currently has annual income of more than $50M with expenditures of about 25% less than their revenues. Current balance reserves are around $300M. They have many wealthy donors and they should be able maintain Pentatone financially. Hopefully their artistic endeavors will be successful also.
