These things are apparently not your grandfather's class D amp. Some sort of novel PS, etc. has anyone had a chance to hear them? A buddy who owns the same speakers as mine has a pr and says they are outstanding...thoughts?

I have not heard them, but I owned a pair of the Ref 18 for three years and the Ref 9 v3 SE before that.

The 18 in particular were very good. No problems driving the Magico Q5 with them. I took them to the dealer when I was auditioning the Q5, listening to the Q5 with them and the Constellation Centaur Stereo. Were they better than the Constellation? No, but they weren't embarrassed either.

I sold them a few months ago after getting a pair of Mola Mola Kaluga.

Apparently the 20s are a significant improvement over the 18s according to my friend who has owned both..

Good to hear, glad he (assume he's a he) likes them. The dealer with whom I initially auditioned the Ref 9 v3 (which I traded for the Ref 18) doesn't carry them anymore. Pretty small dealer network.

I had a good experience with them. Hope he continues to enjoy them.

Hi Sauerball,
Would you please tell us more about the Kaluga?
In what ways is it better than the Ref18 and other traditional amps?
Many thanks!

For me, the Kaluga is the best I've heard at controlling the speaker and leaving as little of its own "sound" as possible. Some people like that, some don't. Once I listened to them, I had to have them.

When I talked to the dealer about others to consider, everything was 2x to 5x the price.

There's a thread here with more discussion about them
