People are too young to remember but the Philippines was the USA's first Vietnam. To this day nobody knows how many people were killed on either side. The US Army here were led by veterans of the Indian wars. Some estimates run as high as a fifth of the Filipino population being decimated by disease as provinces were turned essentially into concentration camps, the result of the new information and classification strategy. Debates raged in the US Congress about the morality of the occupation of a country "won" by defeating Spain. A debate that centered on whether or not a Country that fought for it's own freedom should turn its back on its own history and be colonizers themselves. Fortunately the good guys won that debate with the aid of public sentiment led by anti-imperialist opinion makers like Mark Twain.
As it happened in the Philippines, so has it happened in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Winning is the easy part, occupation is a bitch. People are not sheep.
If we want to look at how it should be done, look no further than the Marshall Plan.
W should have learned from his father. Most of the time a nice, strong, whacking of the head of your opponent with your big stick is more effective than killing him.
