Last night the Detroit Red Wings broke the NHL record with their 21st consecutive home victory.

Given:

  • The home field advantage is real and has been quantified Freakonomics-style.
  • The home ice advantage in hockey goes even further, wherein the home team gets the final change before a face-off.
  • The Red Wings won three games in the streak by OT shoot-out.
  • The previous record holders (Bruins/Flyers) had their streaks in the early 70s, when the threee games mentioned above would have ended in a tie.

Real record or dubious distinction?
