My archaeologist friends are calling BS.

"Yeah, I've seen it. All of the usual problems with overblown claims and breathless media reporting. In fact, it's almost a check-list for the things John Oliver talks about here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rnq1NpHdmw — In this particular case, the culprits are p-hacking & media sensationalism. It apparently hasn't occurred to anyone to question why a balkanized system of Late Classic Maya city-states without any centralized authority would nonetheless conspire amongst themselves to locate their cities not, as one might reasonably imagine, to reflect practical concerns (e.g., access to water, communication, or defense), but rather because they wanted them to look like constellations should future generations ever develop the capability to look down on them from satellites..."
