Can cartridge output decrease with time?

I feel I need somewhat higher volume knob position (12 vs. 11) to achieve the same loudness, as I’m used to.
Can it be an aging cart? I have Kiseki Purple Heart, that is about 4-5 years old.
What else could possibly be a reason for an output drop?
Nothing else has changed in the system.
Actually one thing did- I replaced a metal volume knob with an ebony one, but I was pretty careful in aligning the volume dot
on the new knob with 0 position on the volume control.

There could be a number of reasons why your output dropped from your front end. What phono stage are you using? If tubes, that would be the first place I would look. If not, then look at the power to the preamp/phono stage and the amps. Other possibilities, but those areas would be a good place to start.

I use Shindo Vosne Romanee preamp with phono and replaced tubes fairly recently.

I replaced tubes about a year ago and only noticed the change in volume a week ago.
I’m going to check the new knob position again though
