What are some of your favorite action scenes on Blu-Ray so far?

Here's a short list to get started (lousy film/guilty pleasures included):

  • Casino Royale: The opening chase sequence features Sebastian Foucan, one of the world's top Parkour practitioners. The crazy maneuvers amaze with every viewing.

  • Batman Begins: The chase scene between the Batmobile and the police is insane. If you have good volume capability in your surround system, this one will wake you up.

  • Enter the Dragon: Probably Bruce Lee's greatest fight sequence committed to film occurs when Bruce fights his way through slews of guards in the underground opium plant on Han's island. He showcases the use of various weapons, as well as demonstrating the athleticism that made him a superstar.

What are some of your favorites?

Perhaps one to look forward to (although I have heard there are problems with the audio sync) is Saving Private Ryan. Anyone know (I don't) what it must have cost to film the opening battle at Normandy

I have Saving Private Ryan. I haven't watched far enough into it to determine if my copy has the A/V sync issue. The Normandy landing scene is spectacular and deserves to be included in my list, along with other discs I didn't add.

I showed that at work for a safety meeting (I work for a construction subcontractor). The employees had to identify safety violations happening on the construction site. We had fun!

Pearl Harbor: The initial attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor. Great videography, surround effects, and bass!

Shooter: Swagger and Memphis visit the ex-sniper responsible for the assassination. Swagger had anticipated an ambush and he and Memphis end up in a battle with mercenaries.

Agreed absolutely. I remember picking up Variety and week after week Enter the Dragon was running No. 1 in the theatres and indeed this underground fight scene was the best among all his movies. Like he knew where all his opponents were even when they're behind him. Trivia: Did you know Jackie Chan was one of the many goons of Han from that scene and his neck was broken by Bruce in that quick scene. I learned it only a few years ago through a BL fan page that showed a picture of this scene.

Bruce also broke the arm of one of the goons behind Bob Wall in the tournament face-off where he kicked him into the other folks. Wall smashed into a couple of guys and one of them was injured. There are many stories of injury and "challenges" on the movie sets. Bruce reportedly accepted all challenges from the other actors and extras.

The local cinema had gotten the local, quite decent hifi store to put in a proper sound system, rather than the usual "swill", and the setup was in the first flush of prime performance. In the opening scenes the impact of the gunfire was absolutely remarkable, if you know how a real gunshoot has an intensity of sound that just punches through you, that's what this cinema experience had, for the whole ten minutes or whatever of the opening sequence! I was practically worn out from the intensity of it, and the movie proper hadn't even started: in fact, the rest of the movie was a complete anti-climax!

So, watching this on something like Basspig's setup will probably leave you traumatised for a day or so ...:D

It's tremendous. Part 2 is coming out soon also.

I saw both Ip Man and its sequel in a span of a few days and boy, it got me enthusiastic about martial arts films again. Very well made films on both counts, something I never expected and in fact, I never really felt so good after watching a martial arts movie in ages. The plots, being set in real historical times, Japanese occupation of China and British colonization of HK, makes the movie more dramatic, whether they really happened in Ip Man's life, I really am not so sure, as the notes says both movies were based "loosely' on the life of Ip Man. As a teen, when I was collecting Bruce Lee magazines, I always noticed the pictures of Bruce and an old man who was his teacher and mentor of the Wing Chun style of martial arts. There is no doubt now in my mind the Ip is a true legend in the annals of Chinese martial arts after watching these 2 movies. Fantastic action scenes and great musical score.

Opening 25 minute sequence of Private Ryan is unbelievable.

The Dark Knight -- several incredible action sequences.

Live Free or Die Hard -- several incredible demo worthy action sequences.

The Incredible Hulk -- ditto

Transformers -- ditto

Of all the action flicks i own (i own probably 200 collected over the years from rental shops selling cheap, Amazon, etc...from Die Hard 1-4, Bond flicts, Matrix, True Lies, etc)...the best audio for sub-bass level audio action...is Sly Stallone's recent all-star cast action flick The Expendables. I am telling you...of all 200 flicks, it is the clear winner for testing a system. In particular, watch for the opening 10 minutes when the motorcycle (clearly with no muffler) pulls up into the garage...its like its pulling up into your living room. Watch the opening action scene on the ship container...wait for Dolph Lundgren to let off the first shotgun...smokes!!! And then when Sly and Jason Streatham fly the plane low over the docks and light it up...you will really test your system and your sub. The first time i played it, i had the X-1/Grand Slamms and the Velodyne DD-18 fired up...Velodyne on video mode set at different frequency levels i've customized for the different recording levels of films, mainly action flicks...i just remember laughing and laughing and laughing...it really is fun as an audiophile to just get the explosions delivered right in your living room!
